Aboriginal Art.
The artwork I am featuring in this blog was created by a very talented artist by the name of Terry Saleh. He is an Australian artist who is a descendent of Malay/Indonesian and Papuan/Indian heritage. This background will undoubtedly be why he is described by many as a ‘Spiritual Artist.’
He takes pride in this assessment by confirming that his artwork communicates the serenity, beauty and uniqueness of indigenous people throughout the world. He draws from many cultures to inspire him and he uses his artistic gift to bring people together encouraging them to look deeper into themselves.
Terry's distinctive art is displayed on the Wantok Multicultural Centre at Old Petrie Town in Petrie, Queensland, Australia. Old Petrie Town is a restored historic village replicating life pre1930's.
In 1978, a local landscape architect was requested by the Pine Rivers Shire Council to submit ideas for development of the former Hyde Property in Dayboro Road, west of Petrie. The council also requested that a reserve be made available too for historical buildings around this homestead. It was given the name, North Pine Country Park but in 2000 it was renamed, ‘Old Petrie Town.’

Terry Saleh's creativity encompasses the power of magic and healing and he believes that healing comes from understanding and accepting all people, all cultures, the animal and plant kingdom and our environment.
The rituals, practices and spiritual connections derived from traditional cultures is what inspires Terry and he endeavours to capture their essence whilst striving to communicate the sacred, via his art and music.
This plaque (below) has been errected on one of the large rocks outside the Mulitcultural Center. The building was opened in April, 2002.
His talent and passions have enabled Terry to travel to many parts of the world and in doing so, he has formed valued bonds and connections with indigenous people, their Elders and their medicines in many places.
His rich ethnic upbringing and multicultural ancestry has had much to do with how he chooses to express himself through art and his work is a combination of both traditional and contemporary styles.
Terry's strong connection to the land is portrayed in his art and he manages to convey a wealth of information and respect for Mother Earth in his paintings.
He has a flair for producing powerful visual effects using colour and symbols which carry profound meaning and positive healing energy.
His goal is to stir the soul and the senses whilst simultaneously, bringing about a higher level of awareness and understanding to those who have the pleasure of viewing his work.
Terry Saleh’s versatility is evident in the different surfaces he has either sketched, painted, or carved on. They include canvases, skin, paper bark, wood and clay but he also creates handmade artefacts and instruments which include boomerangs, bull roarers, clap sticks and of course the famous didgeridoo.
