Indonesia # 13: Day Trip to the Komodo Dragons

Usually we do not think much of guided tours, we prefer to explore new areas alone and at our own pace. However, a trip to the Komodo Dragons is only possible on a guided day tour from Labuan Bajo (or as a multi-day tour). However, we can fully recommend this tour! We just booked them at the hostel the day before and were picked up early in the morning and taken to the harbor. The first stop is the famous viewpoint on the island Padar. After the boat has docked, anyone can explore the island for about an hour, which is enough of time. It goes up a few hundred meters to the viewpoint and the view is just beautiful. Just the viewpoint itself is worth the trip.

Next it goes to the island Komodo and to the dragons. These occur on the two islands of Komodo and Rinca, but the dragons on Komodo are said to be larger. Once there, there is a small hike (about 2km), guided by a park ranger where we have seen a total of seven dragons. The length of the hike is in our opinion ideal, not too short and not too long.

After lunch on the boat (each participant gets a lunch box), we went on to snorkeling at Pink Beach. Pink Beach is one of the few pink beaches in the world and is also located on the island of Komodo. There are a few corals to see, which are pretty nice but nothing special. The pink beach is very worth a visit tough. We had relatively low expectations and were pleasantly surprised how pink the grains of sand were. Unfortunately, we only had our GoPro with it us and water in front of the lens, so the pictures are quite bad. But you get an impression of the beautiful color of the beach ;)

At the end of the day we went snorkeling at Manta Point. Since we have already seen so many mantas while diving, we only went in the water for 5 minutes. But for many of the other participants that was the highlight of the whole trip!
The tour costs about 30 USD and is worth every penny. Often such full-day tours also include tourist traps. This tour is absolutely mandatory if you visit Labuan Bajo!

Normalerweise halten wir nicht besonders viel von geführten Touren, wir erkunden neue Gebiete lieber alleine und in unserem Tempo. Ein Ausflug zu den Komodo-Waranen ist jedoch nur in einer geführten Tagestour ab Labuan Bajo möglich (oder auch als Mehrtagestour). Diese Tour können wir jedoch uneingeschränkt empfehlen! Wir haben sie einfach am Vortag im Hostel gebucht und wurden früh morgens dort abgeholt und zum Hafen gebracht. Der erste Halt ist der berühmte Aussichtspunkt auf der Insel Padar. Nachdem das Boot angelegt hat, kann jeder die Insel für ca eine Stunde erkunden was ausreichend viel Zeit ist. Es geht ein paar Hundert Meter zu dem Aussichtspunkt nach oben und die Aussicht ist einfach nur wunderschön. Alleine dafür lohnt sich die Tour schon.

Als nächstes geht es zu der Insel Komodo und zu den Waranen. Diese kommen auf den beiden Inseln Komodo und Rinca vor, die Warane auf Komodo sollen aber größer sein. Dort angekommen gibt es eine kleine, von einem Parkranger geführte Wanderung (etwa 2km), bei der wir insgesamt sieben Warane gesehen haben. Die Länge der Wanderung ist unser Meinung nach ideal, nicht zu kurz und nicht zu lang.

Nach dem Mittagessen auf dem Boot (jeder Teilnehmer bekommt eine Lunchbox), ging es weiter zum Schnorcheln am Pink Beach. Der Pink Beach ist einer der wenigen rosafarbenen Strände auf der Welt und befindet sich ebenfalls auf der Insel Komodo. Beim Schnorcheln gibt es ein paar Korallen zu sehen, diese sind ganz nett aber nichts Besonderes. Der pinke Strand ist aber sehr sehenswert, wir hatten relativ niedrige Erwartungen und waren positiv überrascht wie rosa die Sandkörner waren. Leider hatten wir nur unsere GoPro dabei und Wasser vor der Linse, sodass die Bilder nichts geworden sind. Man erkennt aber die schöne Farbe ;)

Zum Abschluss des Tages ging es schnorcheln am Manta Point. Da wir bereits so viele Mantas beim Tauchen gesehen haben sind wir dieses Mal nur kurz ins Wasser. Für viele der anderen Teilnehmer war das aber das Highlight des ganzen Trips!
Die Tour kostet ungefähr 30 USD und besteht wirklich nur aus Highlights, oftmals sind bei solchen Ganztagestouren ja auch Touristenfallen mit dabei. Diese Tour ist jedoch absolute Pflicht wenn man sich in Labuan Bajo gefindet!
