Arača, 13 Century Church - Photo and Video Story

in #travelfeed6 years ago (edited)

Arača is a medieval Romanesque church located in Serbia. It is positioned between Novi Bečej and Novo Miloševo in the middle of nowhere. It was build sometime at the beginning of 13 century. There was developed settlement around it, but the houses were earthen houses so in time they returned to the earth from which they came. Today it is hard to imagine that once this place was full of monks, passengers, knights of the crusader in departure or return from the East. There is a legend that Richard Lionheart stayed here while returning from Palestine.
Arača survived a lot. It was burnt down and demolished, It was robbed by the Cumans and the Turks, and it served, occasionally, both Catholic and Orthodox faith, and was rebuilt in the defensive fortress... But in the first part of 18 century it was abandoned.

I can't believe that it was a month ago when i decided to go on a photo trip to find this old church. I tried to organise some of my photo friends :) but they all canceled so i could just quit or go on my one. Well why to cancel, it was a wonderful day :D

Map told me it is a almost 2 hour drive, and i knew that i want to be there before sunset so around 1PM i was on the road. When i passed Novi Bečej i came across a sign Salt Lake Kopovo. It sounded as something i need to see. Went off road, walked a bit and seen nothing. Then i saw sheeps and a shepherd. If he does not know, who does? Walked to him, asked can i speak to him and will the dog bite me (dog just checked am i ok :D). "you just drive strait on this dirt road and you can't miss it". And he was right i did not miss it.

I found out later that there is almost 1000 hectares. Wanted to explore more but i was not sure how far is Arača and i wanted to be there on time, so more exploration maybe next time.

After not that long drive i came across a turn that could be the one i was looking for but there was no sign of any kind. After 10 minutes of driving on something that is called road, but it has millions of small bumps and you feel that car is falling apart i arrived to this view.

As i was finishing my walk around some of my colleagues showed up for a wedding photoshoot.

I was waiting for my sunset so asked if i could take some photos while staying out of the way.

Groom was a bit crazy and it was a fun pass of time :)

Then they were gone and i was left all alone. As you can see sunset was a bit boring with no clouds in the sky. So next thing was waiting for the stars.

After setting up the camera for the first foto in this post, there was nothing to do but just to enjoy the peace and quiet. So i got my poncho out (you may remember it from my post about GIFTS ) and enjoyed the view. I must admit it is interesting feeling to lie under the stars all alone in front of the place like this. And a bit spooky at moments :D

2+ hours can be a long time, so taking long exposure selfies with Canon 5d classic is an option, not a great one, but still :D

And another star trail photo, this one a bit shorter, maybe not full hour.

Man, your photos are insane! I have never done star trail photography but have been wanting to try it out for ages

Thanks.
you should try it, it is better when you have wide lens with low f stop, but for example this is done at 4.5 because i wanted to get as much stars as i can, and the canon 10-18 lowest is 4.5.

I have a 18mm f1.8 lens (APS-C), my 10-20mm wide angle lens is great for travelling because it's so lightweight but its minimum aperture is also f4.5.. Which of these lenses would you recommend to use for star trails?

most of my star photos i done with 18-35 sigma at 1.8. and if it is wide enough for you, that would be the choice. Because you could probably do it then at ISO 800 to maybe 1200 depending of conditions.
In this last photo i was on ISO 2000 with f-4.5 but it was really low on light pollution there.

so if you don't need wider frame then 18mm go with 18mm at 1.8. and think about focusing before it gets dark, if you don't have a scale on the lens it is really hard to focus when everywhere is just dark :D

I have the same lens, the Sigma 18-35 f1.8 is so awesome! Just soo heavy for travelling, my camera gear now weights almost half as much as all my other stuff combined.. I will give it a try, thanks for your advise!

i don't do a lot of hikes but after a while you do feel the weight of it. but 1.8 is 1.8 :D

A 13th century church? Wow... That sire has stood the test of time

I love the detailing of that circle on the top of the building and the design of the entrance. It has a really nice look. Well, the people of the 13th century were quote creative. Lol

That is definitely a great place for a wedding photo shoot...

Oh, i love the photo with the star trails more, the star trails add more beauty and magic to the photo of the building. I do like the one with the sunset too but not as much as I love the one with star trails...

it is fascinating that it is still standing after all that years of neglect.
i was hoping for some clouds for the sunset, but then i would not get the stars, you can't win them all :D

Yeah, true! Maybe you will go back there someday for the clouds?😊

And that Richard Lionheart guy, who is he? I haven't heard or read of him...🙈 am I living under a rock? Lol

i will probably go there again.
Richard I king of England.

That will be awesome! Oh, I see, I know so little about royal families...🙈

Fantastično mesto i odlične fotografije! Imam utisak kao da nije Srbija u pitanju, osim možda fotografije sa oranicama. A i naučih nešto novo. :)

meni je fascinantno da je za tih 6 sati koliko sam bio tamo ipak proslo bar 6-7 automobila, iako je crkva stvarno u sred nicega i bez jednog znaka da se tamo nalazi.
Hvala

Very cool! And my favorite is the main photo. The rest are cool too though! Resteemed!

thanks.
i am still struggling with full architectural photos i am sometimes not sure what to do :) main one is more an environmental so that is something that i am more comfortable.
i was surprised with the wedding photos, as i was not really trying to much, but maybe that is the secret, or maybe the place is just too nice to make a bad photo :)

I would love to spend some time in Serbia. So much to see in the world. That salt lake looks cool and the what s spot for a wedding shoot

there are some interesting places :D The salt lake looks like this in the summer, and it is a lake when it starts to rain more. i need to go back there and explore it more. think it could be interesting wild life photography when water is there

Howdy from Texas bil.prag! wow that is some church! I love those arches and windows. Really enjoyed the photos and the video, the time exposure shots are amazing, I'm glad you had the patience. Do you specialize in architectural photography or a combination of different types?

Thanks.
i kinda don't specialize in anything, it is kinda a curse of my life :D photography is a hobby for me (i do make a few $ now and then photographing parties). architectural is maybe something that i don't do often. Living in a small town, not that much architecture to photograph.

well sir your photography is excellent!
