Thanks.
you should try it, it is better when you have wide lens with low f stop, but for example this is done at 4.5 because i wanted to get as much stars as i can, and the canon 10-18 lowest is 4.5.

I have a 18mm f1.8 lens (APS-C), my 10-20mm wide angle lens is great for travelling because it's so lightweight but its minimum aperture is also f4.5.. Which of these lenses would you recommend to use for star trails?

most of my star photos i done with 18-35 sigma at 1.8. and if it is wide enough for you, that would be the choice. Because you could probably do it then at ISO 800 to maybe 1200 depending of conditions.
In this last photo i was on ISO 2000 with f-4.5 but it was really low on light pollution there.

so if you don't need wider frame then 18mm go with 18mm at 1.8. and think about focusing before it gets dark, if you don't have a scale on the lens it is really hard to focus when everywhere is just dark :D

I have the same lens, the Sigma 18-35 f1.8 is so awesome! Just soo heavy for travelling, my camera gear now weights almost half as much as all my other stuff combined.. I will give it a try, thanks for your advise!

i don't do a lot of hikes but after a while you do feel the weight of it. but 1.8 is 1.8 :D
