Travel Digest

#1 Abandoned mine, Kanchanaburi, Thailand

First, @thinkit takes us Kanchanaburi, Thailand, where he and his friend explore an old tin mine by motorbike to get to 'Thai Everest'. They wind through 15-20km of tunnels with dozens of junctions, hoping not to get lost as they ascend the mountain. Eventually they find a place to park the bikes and climb the rest of the way on foot. Taking off their motorbike boots for better grip on the rocks, this seemed like a good idea on the way up, but less so on the way back down. Having reached the summit with sore, cut feet, they were forced to make some shoes out of grass and zip ties to climb back down to the bikes.

#2 Tulip Festival, Istanbul, Turkey

Next, @rosy440 shows us the Grand Tulip Festival in Istanbul Turkey. It runs for one month, and tulip bulbs are given to residents to decorate their courtyards and houses in the spirit of the festival. Photographers from all over the world are invited to capture the tulip exhibitions, and the best photographs are rewarded with cash prizes. Tulips have been an important symbol in Turkey since the Ottoman Empire. Many shops and bazaars sell items displaying these beautiful flowers, including tiles, ceramics, carpets, ornaments, and clothes. The Tulip symbol is also frequently seen in architecture, paintings, and mosaics.

#3 Te Marae at Te Papa, Wellington, New Zealand

Finally, @stabilowl takes us to Te Marae at Te Papa in Wellington, New Zealand. A marae is a place where Maori people gather for celebrations, and thus it is usually quite large. At Te Papa, a marae has been built specifically for tourists. It is inside the Te Papa museum and is much smaller in size. It was also constructed based on a modern interpretation of a traditional marae. The structure follows traditional maraes, with a triangular roof supported by two large front poles. Bright and colourful carvings inside of the marae combine modern art and culture into traditional Maori style carvings.

I've always felt awesome when I find out how different and interesting other people's culture are, even if I will probably never experience them myself T_T. Thank you for finding and curating these posts, choo! <3
