A Dream Beach Not Too Far From Lisbon: Praia do Ribeira do Cavalo

Can you imagine, we almost decided to skip this beach! We hadn't done too much research about the beaches around Sesimbra, just looked at the map and thought this might be a nice spot. But we didn't know how nice, until we arrived and saw this beach for the first time. The 30-minute hike from the parking spot was worth it! This article first was published less then 24 Hours ago on our Lisbon Travel Blog.

On the way back toward Sesimbra from Cabo Espichel, we pulled over to check out the beach of Riberia do Cavalo. After realizing that reaching the beach would require a 30-minute walk through the brush, we almost bailed; this was the final activity of our five-day road trip, and we were both tired. But we decided to tough it out… and thankfully so, because this beach was worth it.

There’s a lot to love about the Praia do Ribeira do Cavalo, from its fine yellow sand, to its gorgeous milky-blue water, but its best characteristic is its seclusion. If you want to get here, you have to work for it… the car park is small and far away, and with a few steep, rocky descents, the hike isn’t exactly child’s play. In fact, I bet very few families with young children even attempt it, which wins the beach a lot of points from us.

It might be different during the summer, because people with boats can park off-shore and swim over. But on this sunny day in early January, we were nearly the only people on the sand. The only others were three young guys, one of whom got completely buck naked before strutting around on the sand. For real. (“Jürgen, I think we need more pictures of … the beach. Yes, use the zoom lens.”)

We laid out on the sand longer than we had planned; it was nice with the sun and the calming sounds of the waves, without any traffic noise or loud groups of people. Also, we weren’t too enthused about the looming hike back to the car. I imagine a lot of people stay longer on this beach for exactly that reason. But eventually we had to head back home; this had been a perfect way to end our first big trip away from Lisbon.

Beaches are always beaches. Nothing new, I almost never even bother going there, as there are plenty of more interesting places... cool pix though

Haha, I love your comment... I go to beaches sometimes, but I do like mountains more...

I like my beaches but don't understand when people just do a 100% beach vacation, we get bored after 1 1/2 days :)

Oh wow it sure does look like a perfect beach! I think I've realised that (some of) the best beaches require effort to get to. But they're probably so beautiful because they won't be filled with people leaving trash left and right!

And we almost skipped it!!! Stupid us! And at the end it was not bad at all and so worth it. Thank you for stopping by.

Hiya, just swinging by to let you know that this post made the Honorable Mentions list in today's Travel Digest!

It looks like a perfect secluded spot for relaxation. Although I usually hate beaches, I can definitely see myself sitting on those rocks with my feet in the water... ah, when is that summer coming?

Hate BEACHES??? No way! The problem though in the summer, this beach is PACKED!!!

Sorry, but it's true... don't like them at all...
Looks like this beach would attract a lot of people in summer! Well done on having it to yourselves (and a naked guy) this time! :D

Thanks for sharing such beautiful beach!!! it looks like the ones found in the Mediterranean Sea

What is your favorite beach at the Mediterranean. In Valencia we don't have beaches like that, everything is flat but if you go further south, there are bays but nothing like this one in this article. Thank you for your comment.

Great question It is very difficult to say which is my favorite one. In Cote d'Azur, Croatia and in my country there are beautiful beaches. I have not been to Greece or Turkey but I saw other beautiful photos like yours By the way I also saw nice photos around Benidorm which should be not far from Valencia maybe I am wrong.

The color combination in the head image is very nice. I also like the photo with the sea birds. How come I never heard of this beach when I was in that region? Thanks for sharing a new place to my travel map!

I agreed with your observation. but I have missed the photo with the bird in it.
Cheers

@for91days thanks for sharing such a beautiful photo of beaches especially those with the unique shape of a rock. The water is so clear and I believe these beaches are full of summers during holiday and weekends
Cheers

The only good thing is, that there is no real parking, so it can't get too full during the summer month.
