Travel Update: Fellow Steemians Make my Last Day in Mexico Very Special!steemCreated with Sketch.

in #travel7 years ago

Until now I didn't do social media, facebook, twitter, blogs, or spend much time on the computer. I do travel and lots of it!

I had a negative attitude. What is this facebook? So I can have 1,000 facebook friends to feel good about myself? Talk about how I'm working under the table in Korea? Get approval from people I met for 5 minutes 3 years ago? I'd rather be exploring Vietnam, experiencing the real world lost in a romantic adventure with my "then" girlfriend.

We'll I had it all wrong. Real people are real whether communicating online or in person and steemit has given me a deep appreciation for that; but there is nothing better than experiencing the cross-over from steemit friend to friend in the real!

I got the pleasure of spending my last day in Mexico with @mithrilweed, @donnaincancun, @luzcypher. After meeting them all in person and learning that we all have much more in common than steemit, truly brought another level to our friendship; and I hope to meet other steemians along my travels as well.

I'm now in Up-State New York and after a month I'll be in Thailand; but I'll be following and keeping in-touch with them on steemit in a much more significant way. @luzcypher might even meet up with me in Thailand later in the year.

Highlights of our Day Together

For some reason I started following this van on the way to @luzcypher's apartment; I got lost and showed up late. Not very "Travel Pro". When I finally got there I met @mithrilweed and @donnaincancun for the first time in person. I was given a warm welcome and handed a cold beer.

Naturally we all talked steemit for a while @donnaincancun and myself are newbie minnows, so we were on the learning side of the conversation. The more we learned the more incredibly revolutionary we come to understand this platform really is.

Lucifer!....I mean @luzcypher treated us to a great chicken paella type dish for lunch at his place, it was fantastic. Soon after, one of us sprung the idea to go to a local cenote. Which is this!

Pools of crystal clear fresh water purified through the biggest underground river cave system in the world! There are hundreds of these pools. This is Cenote Azul, one of the more popular easier to access cenotes.

So we piled into @donnaincancun's car and off we went, like a bat out of hell. Half-way there she explains that she used to race cars...then it made sense, white knuckles and all!

Here's a photo of Donna looking back for a photo opp, while almost getting us all killed! Bumper cars anyone?

To read about how she wisely blew through the Mexican Police check stop with open beers in the car. See @luzcypher and @mithrilweed post here.

As you come up on the cenote first thing you encounter is the cliff to jump from. Donna goes right for it immediately. Forgetting my slight fear of heights and with a little encouragement from @luzcypher "go for it!" I too made the plunge.

How incredibly refreshing and beautiful it was! We spent the afternoon swimming, taking in the sun, and letting real minnows nibble and clean the feet of steemit minnows! What a great afternoon.

Afterwards we all got back into the race car; in half the time it says on google maps we were at Los Aguachiles Mexican restaurant. I'll never forget the huge sigh of relief @milthrilweed let out 30 seconds upon exiting the car!

There we enjoyed a great selection of fish and shrimp tacos. I mean like really good quality food. Playa del Carmen is not your average Mexican pueblo. This place has western standards and hundreds of restaurants competing for that tourist and local dollar. This makes for one of the best small cities I've been to for eating out. One restaurant after another with great food at great prices!

Being the visiting traveler, as they all knew each other previously having more "normal" permanent lives in Mexico; I made sure to let them know how special they made my visit, and how much I enjoyed their company. I then headed back to my hotel to pack and less than twenty four hours later I found myself ridding the NYC subways!

It was a very special way to end my time in Playa del Carmen. Thanks again guys I had an incredible time!

If I new you were in Playa I totally would have been down for meeting up. Next time! Thanks your reply and info on the restaurant!

haha, no I'm not. I'm in LA. But, last two times in Playa I went there. At any rate, yes, would be cool to meet up in your travels. Where are you going in Thailand?

Looks like I'll be spending quite some time in China this year for work. Hope to get down to Thailand while over there.

Ahh I see. I'll be all over Thailand and Loas for 4 months. Don't really have an exact plan yet. But I'll keep you post for sure.

I love this girl! I read all your various posts about this meetup and I'm sure I cannot begin to compete in Bangkok. I want to go to that spring though. Mexico in that area was high on my list before I came here. But I'm still happy with my choice.

I see you resteemed that post. Thank you! You've done well regarding choosing Thailand, it can't be beat, especially for food and culture. Looking forward to steemit meet up Bangkok. That will surely be fun.

You're welcome. It's part of my new strategy to resteem multiple posts on various themes. Today was travel and meetups :) This girl with a million ideas already is going nuts now! Idea overload....

Did I mention I cannot eat Thai food? I have insulted the entire country with my pickiness. My Thai friends have this certain look they give me when I refuse food. No chilies, eggplant, noodles, tomatoes, or garlic to name the top reasons I do not eat normally here.

I eat market produce and BBQ meat on a stick for the most part. Thanks to the good old USA for my autoimmune disease. I'm actually really happy with my food here but it is not typical by any means. I have some videos to post that show you all the food I cannot eat as I walk through the vendors. It smells great though :)

Wow what a pisser! Not being able to eat the delicious Thai food. That's one of the main attractions for me coming there. Unbelievable what you mention in your other post regarding your experience in the USA.

Thanks for the advice regarding my post. If I keep writing and writing and it seems like I am. I'll certainly break the post into two or three posts. Like you were mentioning would be cool if we can get a group together while I'm there. Regardless I'd be thrilled if it's just you and I for an afternoon. I'm probably going to stick to the title I originally had, keeps the insulting nature of the post on me not on the country it's self. This is the original title I had.....

Travel Update: First week back in the USA after a three year absence! In Depth Report! Mind Blowing Culture Shock! Stranger in my Own Land!

Yes, my son is so mad at me. He loves Thai food and is still in California. He constantly asks me to just try it, but I really react badly to those ingredients. It's like a full body cramp (charlie horse way inside my body) for 24 hours and then a few days to recover. It's kind of like a horror movie but I'm in it. So I try not to eat the stuff that hurts me and try to eat all the "anti-inflammatory" foods.

I actually do really well here for food - especially compared to San Diego.

I could not find food at all in Laos the first time I was in Vientiane. Luckily I travel with seeds and various potions. The second time I was with a girl who found me some Indian food which is pretty much ok.

I can imagine the shock of seeing all the changes. It came on slowly while I was there so I was kind of used to it. I'm talking to a girl on here who just moved back home to Northern California after 3 years and she's having the same shock. I have some horror stories I will put on here.

For the moment I am commenting like a fiend. I got $41 for 1 comment yesterday!!!! Visions of relaxing about money are dancing in my head.

Yes, definitely let's get together no matter what. We have to post photos here anyway and I could really use a break :) Do you know what area you will stay in? BTS or MRT?

Wow, that's intense I feel for you with your food sensitivities, but I commend you on your positive attitude! I can imagine how hard it can be for you. 41 dollars for a comment. Incredible! I'm not sure where I'll be staying. I'm in a toss of up of the traditional Ko San Road Backpacker experience (actually like a block or two outside the heart so it's more calm) or not. Have any recommendation?

Yeah it's hard not to be weirded-out when returning to such a satanically socially engineered society. Peaceful Thailand seems very normal to me compared to the mentally deranged I see here. Anyway bit strong language. I've got get steemin. Tomorrow.....manana lol!

I see it's getting to you! I did not even want to get into the people and their attitudes. I was more concerned with protecting you from poison!

"No one needs anyone, they don't even just pretend." That's from "I'm afraid of Americans" David Bowie - the first song I put on my blog here lol. (Happy 4th!) I have blasted that song for years. I will analyse the video here one day maybe. But the key takeaway is that no one smiles in the video except for the psychotic guy and even he is sneering more than smiling.

I have a many-part series on my "real" blog about trying to smile at people in California - it did not go well and I stopped after about a year of agony. I should have moved to Thailand where every single person is delighted to see me. The joy I can cause at 2 am in my 7-11 is overwhelming.

Looks like you're having a good time! Glad to see you met up with some other Steemians... you'll have to let me know if you discover any in the northeastern U.S.

It was a great time. I'll keep you posted. I think I'll be meeting up with @fitnfun in Bangkok next month. We'll see how it goes. You're in the southwest right?

I almost forgot that's where I actually live. I've been in Pittsburgh, Boston, and New Hampshire for the last 3 weeks. I grew up in New Hampshire and am staying with family until 7/25.

But yeah, technically I live in the Phoenix!

Hi, i'm new here. You can check my posts about food, travel and random stuff. Follow me and i'll follow you back, enjoy!! :)

Hi @kkkttt05 - please stop posting the same comment over and over again. This is considered comment-spamming. @steemcleaners

It was great meeting up with you and having some fun. Thanks for the mention.

Nice to meet you... Glad you enjoyed yourself in my neck of the woods. Keep on traveling an steem on!

I was nice meeting you too! Steem on my brother in steem!

Sounds like you had an amazing time during your meet-up in Mexico, and what a change it must be now to be 'back home' after that and all your long travels!
If you ever decide to visit my city, Kelowna (where Uranus is still struggling to overthrow Saturn's rulership) in Beautiful British Columbia, there are a few of us Steemians here you could meet with...but don't come in the winter, it gets almost as cold here as it does in upstate New York.

At the moment no plans for that part of the world at least in the near term, but it's good to know I have a warm welcome.

Yes what change it is to be back "home". What a trip! It's like doing drugs but not! lol

Wow nice! A shame I was not there anymore to meet you too!! Every friend of Frank is also a friend of mine :) Upvoted & Following!!

Awesome. Yes it would have been nice to meet you. Frank is one cool dude! I'll be following you as well. Thanks for your kind comments. Playa del Carmen is a total gem isn't it? Where are you living now?

I just got back from a 4 day camping trip. Have to do a "travel up-date"!

Nice, where are you heading now?? I am in Germany right now.. leaving to Italy soon and then Colombia for a longer trip till Chile. Nice! Yeah it is!

Sounds exciting. I'm in NY with my family until August 8th. Then out to Thailand and Laos.
