I have been going to Stradbroke Island since I was a child. And it is still my favorite place in the WORLD to visit !!
I just spent the long weekend over there for Australia day with my girlfriend Renee and my best mate Paulie and his girlfriend Ash and thought I would share the Island with you, as not many people that travel to Brisbane QLD Australia ever hear about the island. Here are some pics I took over the weekend and some words mixed in about the island.

Its a cheap holiday getaway and the island has everything Australia has to offer, ranging from wildlife, fresh seafood, great fishing and some of the best surf beaches out there. And its only 45 min from Brisbane CBD

Here is a little history about the island.

The Quandamooka people have lived on or around Southern Moreton Bay for tens of thousands of years. Archaeological evidence dates occupation of Minjerribah (North Stradbroke Island) back to at least 21,000 years ago. Many tribes mingled on Minjerribah and local people identify the Noonuccal and Goenpul as the traditional owners of the Island and surrounding waters. The Dunwich area was called Goompee or Coompee, from a word meaning pearl oyster. It has always been home to a sizeable indigenous population, as well as a seasonal visiting place for tribes from other areas. For the past 180 years, it has also been the site of various European settlements, including a military/stores depot and convict outstation (1827-1831), a Catholic mission (1843-1846), quarantine station (1850-1864) and benevolent asylum (1866-1946).

Here is the ref Link if you would like to read up on some more info on the history of the island. http://stradbrokeisland.com/island-history

In 1964, Straddie really took off for tourists as the first drive-on / drive-off barge from Cleveland to Dunwich commenced. So the island was easily accessible, tourists can enjoy the beauty of Stradbroke Island.

You can book the Stradbroke Ferries on their website
Price range from $70 - $80 each way per car on the ferry and they leave from Cleveland every hour.

Accommodation on the island can very, you can have a campground, there are also glamping options, as well as cabins. Backpackers, holiday homes and resorts.
Here is a link to some accommodation options

Now My favorite spot to camp is at Adder Rock.

mmexport1517190953265.jpg
You camp about 100m distance to a beautiful beach and great waves to learn how to surf on.
Camping there is about $14 per person per night.

Also not far from the camp grounds is the Straddie pub / bottle O (stradbroke Island beach hotel ) This pub has a great view !
straddie pub.jpg

And right in between the pub and the camp grounds is straddies best skate park.
straddie.jpg

The Island has 3 skateparks all up.

The first one you see when you get off the ferry at Dunwich, and the other one is located at the caravan park at Amity Point

Check out this edit from a couple years back when we did some skate demos for the local kids. Was a lot of fun :)

Apart from surfing, skating, swimming, fishing etc, you can also go sandboarding

mmexport1517187732805.jpg

It is so much fun but remember to bring water and lots of sunscreen as you will be running up the hill and the sun reflects off the sand alot.

Food

Now for the best seafood on the island make sure you go and see the guys at Rufus King Seafoods, Stradbroke Island, Sovereign Road, Amity Point

North Gorge walk.

At Point Lookout they have built a great board walk around the point named - North Gorge walk.
The walk is about 1.2km and takes about 45 min to complete.
It is well worth the walk not only for the beautiful scenery

but also lots of wildlife like dolphins, manta rays, sea turtles

or on youtube :)

Another great spot to check out is Brown Lake

Brown Lake is pure rain water which has turned brown from the tea trees. It is a awesome place to just chill under a tree on the white sands, or have a float in the water. Brown Lake is also home to some goannas

So if you are ever in Brisbane and looking for that perfect getaway i can't suggest straddie enough, and I hope that one day you will be able to visit this amazing Island.

Cool post @vcclothing. I've never been to Straddie despite being from Brisbane. Two things I'd like to bring to your attention:

  1. As one of the editors for @steemitworldmap’s daily #traveldigest, I would love to see this post pop up on http://steemitworldmap.com. If you're interested, simply go to the website, search for your location, click on code (down the bottom) and add a short description. It will then generate the code you need to copy and paste into your post (not the comments) to have it show up on steemit worldmap. Then your post will be on the map! There’s also a FAQ section if you need it.

  2. We have a pretty strong Team Australia community going here on steemit to support each other. If you'd like to be part of it, then please check out this link for the instructions on how to join https://steemit.com/teamaustralia/@choogirl/team-australia-new-recruits-update-25-01-18-and-happy-australia-day
