Hike # 13: Maiden Cross

in #travel5 years ago

I’m digging into the barrel now for something to post but still have a couple of these left. On the 18th July 2018 we visited this lonely moorland place for an 8-mile hike.

I already posted some snaps about this one here, so some maybe are the same ones, but I felt a proper write-up was in order.

@bingbabe had done a trail run here a week beforehand so knew the way. It starts on the Long Causeway and encompasses both of the reservoirs marked in the yellow circle.

The weather was a little gloomy but it was warm, and had us sweating throughout the whole hike. The bugs were annoying as they had been all through the summer months.

This area is part of the Pendle Bridleway which is a 350 mile stretch of walking paths and bridleways for people who want to get away from the towns and cities for a while.

They have done a good job marking the paths out with new gates and latches. A far cry from what it used to be like years ago, when it was guesswork finding public footpaths and having Farmer Giles chasing you with his fists raised.

This day we took ‘Shadow’ along as he needed a long walk. If it's bad weather he doesn’t come as long haired dogs tend to make a mess of your car with all the muck that they pick up.

We saw barely anybody that day save a bloke walking on his own around half a mile ahead of us. He kept looking back as if checking up on us. Some of these solo walkers are a little strange.

Passing these sheep on the first reservoir we decided not to put Shadow on the lead. He doesn’t generally bother sheep and keeps away from them. After a little nosey and some stern words from the both of us he decided to conform.

This is the view of the far reservoir. We walked right around this and noted the lack of water and the levels. It was quite low due to the drought.

On the far side there was a nice wooded area; Shadow seemed to like this place.

We dropped down to a local village and found the telephone box decommissioned. What did that sign say? ‘We are awaiting a defibrillator’?

uls7o5jn4p.jpg

I can’t guess what that is about. Is it the shock of not being able to make a call due to the telephone box being out of service?

Right now it's not there so the emergency services will need to be called if the shock is too great, maybe next week it will arrive and self-service can be administrated?

Moving out of the village we crossed the far reservoir again and made out way back to the car. I was struggling to keep up with @bingbabe at times; she is a lot fitter than me.

I was being left behind on this one. I had to shout her to slow down and give the old guy a break. The walking was not easy with all these rough stones.

Not a bad walk, but not much to see in terms of sights. Maybe that’s why it’s not featured in the iFootpath application.

Looks like it was a really nice hike to take. We got lucky over here, the bugs really weren't that bad this Summer because of the lack of rain. If there had been more rain, I think the mosquitoes would have been horrible.

Thats such a nice walk! Thinking that the wall in that picture is probably older than the United States really adds to the rich history feeling.

I bet you upped your actifit steps in that walk. Phone booth reminds me of old Dr. Who.

It was several months ago, I'm not sure ActiFit was about then. There's been so many changes recently and incentives.

Serious question: I walk with Sam almost all the time. Does that make me a solo walker or not? I'm just checking my strangeness quotient.

That would be a long walk for me, I'm more of a 4 mile guy. Not that I couldn't do it, and do occasionally, but it would knock my next day performance...

Looks like a great walk, with mostly good footing. I think it's a good thing to have Shadow along. I have the same choices with Sam. Do I put him on the lead or will stern words be enough?

I'm afraid poor Sam is culturally deprived. He's not met sheep at all and has very little experience with cows and horses.

Does that make me a solo walker or not? I'm just checking my strangeness quotient.

I would say no, your are not alone but with a dog. He is your companion.

In the case of Mr Weird, he was continually stopping and staring for 10 seconds at a time, before carrying on. You tend to notice such things.
