Sneznik Castle

The castle of Sneznik stands under the eponymous Mount Sneznik. The history of the castle probably dates back to the 11th century, when the Aquileia patriarchs took over the Loska dolina valley, and they, by building fortresses, wanted to secure important traffic routes. This route was also going through the snow forests towards Istria and Kvarner.

The castle is first mentioned in archival sources in the year 1269 in connection with Meynardus de Sneperch. In the 700-year history of the castle, de Sneperchs were followed by the masters of Raubers, Lambergs, Eggenbergs, Auerspergs, Lichtenbergs, and last Schönburg-Waldenburg.

After the Second World War, the estate Sneznik was nationalized, and since 1983 it has been accessible to the public as a museum. Since the 1980s, numerous civic weddings have been performed at the Snežnik Castle and, more recently, the Floating Castle Festival. Virtual Panorama. Today, the castle is managed by the National Museum of Slovenia.
