A look at the photogenic Grand Palace in Bangkok (pt I)
the shimmering, gold-tiled Phra Si Rattana Chedi
You can't miss it. When you visit Old Bangkok, you will inevitably hit upon the Grand Palace, or at least see it from a distance several times a day. Old Bangkok is a less densely built-up area with lower buildings in comparison with modern Siam or Sukhumvit, so the Grand Palace can be seen from quite a distance.
I absolutely loved visiting this historic part of Bangkok, spending all day just walking around, discovering the way people live, the way people interact with each other, the cultural customs and temples behind every other so corner. Whichever way you go, you will always find something that will amaze you. One of the most truly amazing features of Old Bangkok is the Grand Palace which houses the Emerald Buddha. A definite must-see when visiting Bangkok.
The grass court of the Sanam Luang offers a clear sight on the Grand Palace. Viewed from afar, the palace is truly a piece of art. You will be mesmerized by the grandeur of the stupas, the abundant use of gold and the overall magnitude of the complex.
Wat Phra Kaeo is a complex within the Grand Palace complex. Here we find the most magnificent detailed buildings. The photo on the left shows, from left to right, the Royal Pantheon, the library Phra Mondop, and the golden Phra Si Rattana Chedi which holds part of the Buddha's breastbone. The photo on the right is a detail shot of the Royal Pantheon.
I took a photo of these two gates because it has something mystical. The gate in the back looks almost ghostly, fading in the clouds. But this is just a cool side effect of it being fully white.
Thai Buddhism comes with a range of creatures among which are Yakshas. The statues of these demon look-a-likes are 5 meters (16 ft) tall...
... and they come in pairs! These mythical giants are the guardians of the temple gates.
The Grand Palace might not be the residence of the king anymore but is still used for ceremonies. Many people come here to make offerings and light incense.
TIP FOR DECIDING WHERE TO STAY
The Grand Palace might be at its most magical at night. The entire complex is lit up by many, many lights. It's well worth it to stay at a hotel with a rooftop bar to enjoy this view. This is a view from Dang Derm Hotel on Khaosan Road, a popular place for tourists. There are quite some rooftop bars on this road, but I don't know if their views are as great as this one. So Dang Derm Hotel is a safe bet and, by the way, has a beautiful, small garden on the rooftop as well.

STOPGreat work, it is a lovely part of the city over there. You should see the royal crematorium built for the late king Bhumibol, it is truly spectacular, the whole thing is guilded in gold! The pyre was estimated to have cost a 30 million dollars
