Roatan has two cruise ship docks on the south side of the island - one at Coxen Hole and one at Mahogany Bay. The international airport is also in Coxen Hole, the Islands Capital. The Island ferry, Galaxy Wave, is near Mahogany Bay. The Galaxy Wave provides passenger service to La Ceiba, a city on the mainland of Honduras.

The western end of the island is more developed with more tourist attractions, including West Bay beach and West End Village. When night falls, West End Village becomes a flurry of activity with happy hours, live bands and restaurant specials.

The eastern end of Roatan is more deserted and relatively untouched by the commercial tourist industry. Old Port Royal was the site of a pirate strong hold back in the 1600's, Port Royal is today the name of a local beer. The far eastern most area of the island is accessed only by boats since there are no roads that go past Camp Bay.

Oak Ridge has a number of homes which are only reachable by boat. There are also Mangrove tours by Island native's navigating boats called Dorry's.

Punta Gorda has a large Garifuna population. The Garifuna are the descendants of Caribs Indians and Black African slaves.

My husband and I have a future goal to own a home there. We both fell in love with the island while on a cruise then went back the following year for a week long stay.

It's called Roatan 1, and it's on the main road just outside of Coxen Hole, on the way to Sandy Bay. It is very affordable. It is maybe half completed, and there are many Townhouses and Condos still to be built. Ours is a 4 bedroom 2 bathroom, with a beautiful view of the cruise ship harbor from our terrace.
