Staying in a Traditional Style Japanese Home in Takamatsu, Japan

in #travel7 years ago

After a long day on the island of Takamatsu I hopped on the boat towards Teshima where a Ryokan type experience awaited for me. Unfortunately there wasn't anyone to wait on me, but I was able to stay in a renovated property selected by a Japanese architect living and working in Takamatsu. She had recently refurbished the property, hoping to balance her appreciation for Japanese tradition and that of modern design. I was very happy to converse with her in Japanese and understand some of her influences, one being Tadao Ando, kind of fitting since I just came from Naoshima.

Overall the space was a beautiful place to rest in and I peacefully slept. It was a nice experience to slide open the Shoji doors and look out at the small zen garden at the back of the building. I only wish I would of had more time to enjoy it, the property was nice and I think the area would of been great to explore for a few days. But hey, I had places to be and needed to hop on the mid morning ferry to Teshima. The next island of exploration! Here are a few photos from inside this property.

The simplicity of this interior has such a peace to it. I do quite like the idea of my very own private Zen garden. I could do with a bit of that!

Thanks for the comment @onethousandwords. Yeah, it had a beautiful simplicity but with all the modern comforts. I guess this is quite rare in this day and age (even in Japan).

So true. We have so much stuff now. It crowds us in

Japan is our permanent enemy, but we have to learn what we can learn.

Nice, one of my patrons is a big fan of Japanese culture and art etc... He's a artist & netsuke carver. He often tells me stories about his trips to Japan, but rarely sends me any pics lol

Hey @adammillwardart. Thanks for the comment. Oh really? That's amazing. Yeah, Japan is a great country and it's a shame he doesn't share his pics. I will try to share all my pics from now on here. I live in the UK but tend to go to Japan yearly for work etc. Keep up the good work :)

I don;t think he's much of a shutterbug. I'm not either, I always forget to take pictures at events and things. I enjoy the moment more when I'm not worrying about getting a perfect shot lol

Yeah, to be honest I'm the same. I take pictures for work if I'm travelling as it's part of my job, but otherwise I don't use my camera all too often when I'm back here in the UK. Strange.

Hiya, just swinging by to let you know that this post made the Honorable mentions list in today's Travel Digest!

Again??? So cool :) Thanks so much. You're the best! Keep up the good work
