Exploring Tokyo - The National Museum of Western Art

If anyone knows about architecture they know of Le Corbusier. I suppose he's regarded as a maverick designer. Of course there are many stories of him acting in an irrational manner and causing controversy but I’m not too bothered about that, I look for substance in peoples works and have always appreciated the timelessness in Le Corbusier’s architecture. It seems incredible to me that some of his buildings built and designed in the 20’s are still relevant and fairly modern looking today. Very impressive indeed.

When I visit a new city I always search for the different architecture that I could potentially visit and get inspired by. In Tokyo there are many interesting buildings, but one I wanted to see especially was The National Museum of Western Art in Ueno Park. The setting of Ueno park is very nice indeed, which contrasts with this fairly brutalist building. Although striking on the outside with the concrete walls, the inner galleries and spaces are very open thanks to the glass that surrounds and lets light in. I think the concrete in these pictures is more harsh than it was in person, but I like the grainy tones of these photos on an overcast day. Hey, it can’t always be sunny! haha

So I captured a few photos of the building, they are more for personal documentation but I thought you might get inspired seeing them as well. Enjoy.
