Exploring Melbourne - Shrine of Remembrance
I’m a traveller who likes to go by foot around a city so when visiting Melbourne it instantly seemed quite condensed and easy to explore. Obviously you have the suburbs that require a tram and/or a bus, but all the central locations are defined within a few mile radius. I especially liked it because when I spend my time in London I'm often frustrated because everything is so spread out and takes a lot more time to reach on foot.
One place not far from Flinders Street, the main station in Melbourne, is the Shrine of Remembrance that’s right next to the Kew Gardens. I didn’t know much about this memorial but it was designed by Phillip Hudson and James Wardrop to honour the men and women of Victoria who served in World War I. The outside of the memorial is fairly monolithic in style, untouched concrete that's heavy and fairly obtrusive, which is obviously one of the main points behind it. But it was a pleasant surprise to go inside and see what the interior of this build was like, from the top you get a really nice view of the city which sets off a nice contrast between the skyscrapers that surround a building such as this.
It was a little windy but I tried to capture the flame moving on a sculpture outside, this and the gold window with light coming through the roof were two of my favourite photos from this series. Which one do you guys like? It's worth visiting here if you're ever in Melbourne. Enjoy.
