Rus Al Jinz - The Turtle Beach Reserve in Oman

in #travel5 years ago

Turtle viewing is one of the most famous activity in Oman. Thousands of Turtles annually migrate to the Oman shores to lay their eggs. The Green Turtles are the most famous on Oman shores.

Green Turtles are one of the largest of the sea turtles found in Oman. Though Turtles are classified as an endangered species, they are very commonly seen on the beach of Sur areas of Oman. There are a couple of resorts that offer a guided service. Normally a part of the beach is cordoned by the government, and you need to go with a local tour guide to view the turtles at the beach, or you need to know some local person residing in those areas to take you around.

An adult turtle can lay up to 140 eggs in a clutch at one go, but the estimate is from around 1000 hatchlings only 2 to 3 turtles survive to adulthood. Once born the baby turtles swim out in the ocean in all different directions but it's difficult for them to put up with the mighty ocean and those dreaded creatures that pick up on them. The adult Turtle will migrate thousands of miles during the year but usually they return to lay their eggs on the same beach where they hatched.

Like humans an average lifespan of a Turtle is around 80 years but some of them also live beyond 100 years, and the adult turtles would weigh somewhere between 150 to 200 Kgs.

The guided tours start somewhere at around 9 P.M. only after it gets dark and they would ask you to take minimal pictures so not to disturb them while they are making their nest. During the night time the Turtles get onto the beach, dig a hole and lay the eggs, once done they again get back in the water. The fun part is the Turtles are huge and when they move from one place to other they leave a huge pit so when you are walking on the beach suddenly you go up and down the holes.

Most of the Turtles were in their Nest so we did not feel it right to click their pictures, this little one was in the passing and we managed to click it

This little one was running out, my husband managed to pick it up and then we released him back into the ocean.

This one is a big Daddy

This one is just getting out, I guess it was trying to dig out this place to lay eggs, but just didnt feel right so moving out.

We were lucky to see a handful of Turtles, else there are times when you don't get to see any or may be just 1 or 2.
Eating Turtle eggs or meat can cause serious health problems due to the presence of heavy metals and bacteria in their body.

Though the climate in Muscat is currently between 40 and 45 but this place at night is a good break, the temperature goes down and it gets very windy since its the beach side. After the Turtle viewing we did a Barbecue and enjoyed the climate and the food 😍😍

It was a wonderful break with the family. Our final family Pose.

Turtles really are amazing creatures especially if you are able to see them up close. The little tiny one is so super cute, and then you see how big they can grow to -amazing
