FREE Tenerife Capital: where you can get free cherry tomatoes, see ancient mummies and modern art of rock carvings ;) )))

The capital of Tenerife and all the Canary Islands is the city of Santa Cruz. This phrase, translated from Spanish, means "holy cross." And this was the installation of the cross, which the conquistadors designated the new lands that belonged to them. According to legend, the same cross is still kept in the Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary (Iglesia de la Concepción), built during the colonization of the island. And this is one of the few historic buildings of interest in Santa Cruz.

Near the church you will find the museum "Nature and Man", in the photo it is on the left. Reviews about its exposures are very good. Here you can see the mummies of the Guanches, the first inhabitants of the Canary Islands. The exposition includes the reconstruction of the eruptions of the Teide volcano, the collection of butterflies, old household items, etc. On Friday and Saturday from 4 pm to 7 pm the exposition of the museum can be viewed FREE of charge (it is worth checking the relevance of information and visiting the museum's website).

An ancient church and museum are located on opposite sides of the canal, this dry place of the Barranque de Santos River. The weather on the island is so favorable that it grows wild cherry tomatoes. It is hardly good, but it can be seen in the photo (by the way, this is the maximum scale of Iphone 4, to which all photos of this message were made). Similar "plantings" of tomatoes, we saw on the slopes of the rocks by the sea. In May you can harvest for FREE. But you need to be very careful not to suffer )))

Most of the buildings in the capital are modern buildings. There are many shops and cafes.

In fact, we arrived in Santa Cruz exclusively for the purpose of purchasing a children's wetsuit (for which it was necessary, you can find out in my previous post. By the way, we had to bypass not one store, and if you have such a need, I recommend El Corte Ingles - a modern department store.

And to feel the spirit of the city, go to the African market (the central entrance - in the first photo of the post). Despite the name, this is a very beautiful structure, located on the avenue of San Sebastian. In the morning, you can buy fresh fish, cheeses, vegetables and fruits.

It is interesting to observe the work of local vendors. For example, a shoemaker fixing someone's sandals.

In the building of the market I liked this sculpture, very detailed and "live".
