Attractions of Hoi An #14 The Old House of Phung Hung

This wonderful old house was built in 1780 at the time when Hoi An was a busy, prosperous trading port. It can be found at number 4, Nguyen Thi Minh Khai and is open daily until 6.00pm. Working in conjunction with the local government it is preserved as a museum and was made a “National Historical and Cultural Site” in 1993.

A fascinating journey into the past
This is a tube style house, built in the manner that was the order of the day. Constructed mainly of wood, it has the architectural influences of Vietnamese, Japanese and Chinese. Two storeys are covered with a 4 sided roofs in the Japanese way. Originally the ground floor was a shop and the living quarters were upstairs. The shop sold condiments like cinnamon, pepper and salt, and also silk, chinaware and glassware. Today the family live on the ground floor.

No less than 80 pillars support the structure. Each one standing on a base designed isn the shape of a lotus leaf. The upper floor has a balcony running around it.
