Attractions of Hoi An #8 Quan Cong Temple

in #travel7 years ago

The Quan Cong Temple in Hoi An, was consecrated in 1653, this small temple is situated in the heart of the Ancient Town. It is dedicated to Quan Cong who was an esteemed Chinese general in the three-kingdom period of ancient China. He was considered to be a symbol of loyalty, sincerity, integrity and justice. As is the custom here the Quan Cong temple was constructed with many houses combined together. The houses are joined by rafters, and roofed with colourful glazed pipe-shaped tiles.

The altar at the culturally significant Quan Cong Temple

There is a partially gilded papier-mâché statue, on the central altar towards the back of the temple. The temple has been restored four times: in 1827, 1864, 1904 and 1966. There is still an archive of precious objects including an historically important letter to the Emperor.

As people make an offering to the statue of Quan Cong, the caretaker solemnly strikes a bronze bowl. The chime fills the room.

This is by no means an impressive temple by Vietnamese standards but it is quaint and deserves a visit. It is also a working temple, which warrants a mention.

The best time to visit Hoi An is between April and June: Read about this in depth here: https://steemit.com/travel/@inseasia/best-time-to-visit-vietnam-5-hoi-an
