Attractions of Hoi An #11 Assembly Hall of the Fujian Chinese Congregation

This was originally a traditional assembly hall. It latterly underwent a change of use into a temple dedicated to Thien Hau, a deity from Fujian province in China. The re is green-tiled triple gateway here that was erected in 1975. On the right-hand wall there is a mural that shows Thien Hau, crossing a stormy sea to rescue a foundering ship. Her way is her way lit by a lantern. On the left hand wall there is a mural showing the heads of the six famous Fujian families who fled China and came to Hoi An in the 17th century.

As one enters the first chamber there is a statue of Thien Hau. On each side of the entrance stand the deities who alerted Thien Hau if sailors found themselves in distress, the red-skinned Thuan Phong Nhi and Thien Ly Nhan, who is green-skinned.

In the final chamber, there is a central altar that shows the seated figures of the heads of the aforementioned six Fujian families. Their successors as clan leaders, are also present below them. To the right of the rear of the altar, there are three fairies and other smaller figures that represent the 12 Ba Mu or midwives. The shrine has become a place of pilgrimage for childless couples, who come to pray for children and leave fresh fruit as offerings.
