Attractions of Halong Bay #9 Bai Chay Bridge

The impressive Bai Chay Bridge connects Hon Gai with Bai Chay in Halong Bay. It carries four lanes of traffic and two pedestrian footpaths more 160 feet above the Cua Luc Straits. It was built in a way that allowed the busy bay traffic to pass beneath it, throughout the construction process. The bridge opened in December 2006 and has been broadly welcomed by residents and tourists alike. It is big by any measure: 3,629 feet in length and 82 feet wide. The central span is 1,427 feet.

It made a big impact on life in the region. Because of the nature of the coast line here making the crossing between the two promontories saves an alternative road journey of around 25 miles, on roads that are not the fastest. The Bai Chay Bridge did though signal the death of a local ferry that had operated for decades.

Watching one of the huge ocean going liners pass under the bridge especially at night is a real treat. The cable stayed bridge looks spectacular at all times but especially when darkness falls. It carries Highway 18 and has increased trade in the area immensely.
