The Rainbow Vents (Iceland Day 6)

in #travel6 years ago (edited)

Welcome to the sixth day of our Iceland trip! For this post we'll be traveling to a place with some fun geothermal activity, a place called Hverir.

But first I want to share a few interesting photos on the way there.

This was the view outside a gas station we stopped at. (Goodness, gas is insanely expensive). A giant ship parked along the snowy bank of the river.

This gives you an idea of how windy it was while driving, there are these little white wisps of snow blowing over the road.

... And we're here! Already we can note that there are areas where the snow has melted. We're looking at a fairly large body of hot water, releasing plumes of steam into the cold air. This photo has a neat filter on it, chosen automatically by the smart phone.

Along the main hot lake, we can see many steam vents along the walking path. At the start of this path, the ice still held strong, and it was easy to get to the first couple of vents.

This is how quickly the steam spews out of the vents. Got some green life just chilling out in the sweet spot.

We played inside the smelly smoke. It smelled like that rotten egg sulphur smell. And we like that smell. We thought, "hey free spa treatment!" Though I don't know if that's a real thing, something about opening pores and such.

The steam here makes the setting look very eerie... Zombies... Nearby?

MVIMG_20180406_135734~2.jpg

As you might imagine from the combination of snow, steam and dirt, the walking path became a gross pile of goo.

But what's interesting is that there's hidden color in the mud. It's not clear from here but the snow is covering up a rainbow of colors. Unappetizing, slimy colors though.

Watch as a zombie trudges through the rainbow mud.

Yum! Our boots got pretty disgusting as we arrived back at the car. We spent a bit of time kicking snow to try to wash out the gunk. It was quite persistent, so we gave up and took the rainbow goo along with us for the rest of the trip. Okay okay, it's not really rainbow, at this time it was all boring reddish brown.

All in all, a very interesting place to explore.

Here's a link to the beginning....

And the journey continues here...

AND now I want to go to Iceland! So beautiful!

Every now and again I see amazing deals - I'll have to start watching closer. Keep the adventure coming!

Woooo, that ship! How does it turn? Does it turn? What if the river freezes, does it get stuck? Aaah, I want to interview the captain.

Hahahashdasd, that spa treatment. I wonder if the sulphur is bad for the skin. I know that cells used to actually absorb sulphur and other kinds of volcanic minerals in the primitive days of organisms billions of years ago. I wonder if we can have more immunity to sulphur because of that (or if there is sulphur poisoning, I don't know!)

And you speak Chinese! :D I want to learn it! My friend from Malaysia who lives in Taiwan sent me a book to learn Mandarin. It includes a CD with word pronunciation. But it was more like "hear, repeat, learn" than "read, analyse the grammar structure, learn", which is more of my style than the former.

Haha I was wondering if someone was going to notice that I was speaking Chinese. Can't say much about styles of learning. I had to do Chinese homework as a kid that involved quite a bit of repetition.

I can't understand one word from what you said anyway in the video. :( It just sounds Chinese (the dancing sounds up and down from the tones).

I used to do repetition for French, but it's the one I speak the worst. For Esperanto, I learned it by chatting with it online, and English was with conversation, analysis and lots of tests.

I think the best part of this series is knowing you made it back home again safely. Srsly. I wouldn't want to lose you -- and certainly not to something like this. What the hell were you thinking?

Hey hey hey, wouldn't be the worst place to get lost!

What a cool trip! and I love the pictures of the rainbow goo the best! hehehehehe

wow - i'd love to travel all over the world -but i'm nooooooooooot so sure I'd love the freezing cold :)

and the smell of rotten egg sulfur doesn't make it any more appealing LOL

thanks for the post @eonwarped - nice job on Hook Em Up :)

Thanks! Actually I think I remember seeing pictures of this place in summer where it was crazy rainbow colors, and it's warmer then haha. That might be the time to go. ;)

Ok!!! I will trust your advice then hehehehe
Summer.it is!

This looks like so much fun! What a beautiful winter wonderland! I have smelled sulphur before and it is awful at first but you get used to it. The steam does look pretty awesome. Wonderful post! Love it!

Thanks! Looks like I'm not the only one then about sulphur haha :)

We have a town close to where I grew up that has sulphur baths in their basements that people still use because they believe that there are health benefits to it. The entire town smells like sulphur because there are so many baths there. Driving through that town so many times as a kid you get used to the smell after a while. LOL

What a great adventure!

Geothermal heat is amazing, there is so much potential for humanity when we get serious about harnessing the power of these energies.

Gas prices... yeah I imagine all of their fuel is shipped in.

Yeah Iceland can be the test! Then I started to think about how Bitcoin would fit right in. And then I looked up what their situation is... Bitcoin is banned from transacting but not from mining or holding. And someone made Auroracoin. Interesting....

Wow! Those are some incredible photos.

Consistently amazed that our world provides a lifetime of adventure and exploration. Thanks for sharing your adventures (for those of us who may never make it to Iceland).

It sure is amazing. It's fun to see how we've started to fill up the steemit world map as well

Waah. That place looks so cool. Is it still cold their or warmer? ^^ I love you to see yah walking like a zombie. ^^

Cold cold cold cold cold haha well the steam is warm.

Boom! Figured! Glad you had fun!

is this all starting to look the same or is it just me? this looks like the one you got the curie with ... still beautiful tho!! heehee

It's just you :P Iceland does kind of look the same after awhile but they are pretty different things I'm sharing! Watch out for the next one you might like it hehe
