The Swiss Adventure: Day 5 - New Year's Day

in #travel7 years ago (edited)

Happy New Year! "Should auld acquaintance be forgot, And never brought to mind?"...

Enough singing! As you may be aware, across the world there are mixed opinions on whether New Year's Day is a 'day-off' or not. In some countries (including the UK) the vast majority of shops are open for at least a portion of the day, therefore city high streets and shopping centres are filled with shoppers looking for those early January bargains.

Switzerland, however, is NOT one of these countries. On New Year's Day, everything is closed. Everything! Meaning there isn't really much point attempting to venture out anywhere.

So today's plan?

Relax, reflect and plan; both tomorrow's trip (we have to make up for not being able to go out today right?) and for 2018 too!

This turned out to be a great idea as the weather outside wasn't great, but it did make for a really impressive photo (as seen at the beginning of this post).

Tomorrow's plan

This was going to be an interesting one as in Switzerland on the 2nd January it's Berchtolds Day, which commemorates Duke Berchtold V of Zähringen, who founded Bern, the capital of Switzerland, in 1191 after he declared he would name his fledgeling city after the first animal he killed which happened to be a bear, which is Bern in German.

Enough of the history lessons, it meant that a lot of Switzerland was going to be closed. So, we sat and read through so many travel websites about things to do and stumbled upon a nearby town called Rapperswil, which turned out to be an hour away on public transport and the journey would take us through Zurich.

The plan for tomorrow:

  1. Go to Rapperswil, which should be relatively quiet as not a lot will be open
  2. Stop off in Zurich on the way back to see what IS open.
  3. Lots of photography!

The trip so far...
