The Swiss Adventure: Day 4 - Astrophotography Attempt & Light-painting

in #travel7 years ago

After a long day up in the Alps, when we got back to Zurich we just wanted to relax. But when I checked an app on my phone for when the next 'clear night' was going to be (no cloud coverage) it showed that this night had <1% cloud coverage. So out we ventured in the cold with a camera and a tripod.

It was cold, but surprisingly not as dark as I would have hoped for at 11 pm. The reason: the moon! Unfortunately, it was a full moon, which flooded us and the surroundings with just enough light to make astrophotography REALLY difficult! Nevertheless, we gave it a go anyway.

After just a few photos, we realised we weren't going to get too many stars. Then whilst a car drove past and we got the lights streaked across the frame... it gave me an idea.

So I pointed the camera straight ahead, set all the camera settings to cope with a shutter speed of 30-seconds and asked my wife, Bex, to press the shutter button when I was ready.

Out I ventured into the muddy field (much to the confusion of Bex) but THIS was why...

I basically ran around with a lit torch. Once Bex saw the result, she wanted to give it a go.

Once she'd seen the result, she had an idea! We decided to create images that signified the ending of one year and the beginning of a new.

Goodbye to...

Hello to...

Once we had decided that we'd been out in the cold and mud for long enough, we went back to the house and joined our friends for a 3-hour board game session playing our favourite game (although Bex wouldn't agree with that), the Right Dad Cashflow board game.

This photo was taken just as the clock ticked over into 2018...

Tomorrow's plan
