Sleeping Bear Dunes, Michigan
I took this trip some years ago, so I am not sure which ferry's are still operational or what their operating seasons are, so be sure to do your research ahead of time if you are driving from the west side of Lake Michigan.
I would highly recommend taking the ferry if you are driving from Wisconsin, unless you have a love of sitting in Chicago traffic.
Let's see: traffic, or watch your car getting driven onto a boat while you lounge on the deck and enjoy the scenery, then spend the next couple of hours being a bum while you take the ultimate scenic shortcut?
Count me in for the ferry.
This particular ferry was out of Manitowoc, WI.
Nope, this is not Hawaii, it's Michigan!
Be careful of the other side of these dunes: it's a 450 foot high roll to the bottom.
The non-cliff side of the park has plenty of beautiful hiking trails down to the lake beach.
I almost forgot, there is another route to get to/from Upper Peninsula Michigan besides the ferry and the southern Chicago traffic route, and that is the route that I took back: the northern route across the Mackinac bridge.

He does all of his own artwork in his posts, which range in topic from comic to tragic. He firmly believes that artwork is for everyone, backed by studies that have shown how artwork builds and mends neural pathways in our brains. For him, this competition is a mission to bring as many people as possible into visual creativity and foster the continued work of those already doing it.
I get mini panic attacks when I go over bridges like that. There is one on the Delaware/NJ border that I dread whenever I have to go that route.
Yeah I guess it is a pretty good survival instinct to be nervous of bridges like these but it must be pretty inconvenient especially if you have to commute over one.
