"Rothman's Tower": Samara Legends

in #travel6 years ago

This factory pipe has been on the Volga coast for more than a century. Landmark of local scale, popularly called - "Pechka" or "Rothman's Tower". It is believed that these are the remains of a silicate brick production plant, which was owned by a German by the name of Rotman. But for sure nothing is known, some rumors and conjectures.

The most common version, which kopipastiy on all sites about the sights, that this tower - the remains of a pipe for burning limestone, at a factory for the production of bricks. It seems like a white silicate brick of the correct form was produced at this small enterprise. For the price, it was cheaper than red, and the affairs of the owner Rothman went uphill. Moreover, the raw material for bricks was mined nearby, on the slopes of the Sokolii mountains. But local competitors didn’t like it - the German’s success didn’t give them peace, by agreement, they decided to get rid of him. They bribed creditors who demanded a single return of all loans taken from Rothman. The businessman failed to return the money, and committed suicide. And even here they came up with a legend that a German walked along the shore for a long time, picked up fragments of bricks with his stigma. Then he sat down near the stove, laughed and shot himself.

Samara ethnographers refute this version. According to their assumptions, Rothman owned a brick factory, but it was located elsewhere, in the city. Material for his plant Rothman really mined in the area of Studeny ravine. The works were carried out exclusively in winter, the blocks of limestone were loaded onto carts and transported over ice to the place of production.

There is another version that this pipe is of a later, Soviet period. What did the prisoners from the camps who were in those parts work on in the production of bricks.

The third version, the tower was built before the revolution by a nameless entrepreneur who made bricks on the spot, near the deposits of raw materials. Unfortunately, the archives did not find any documents about this place.

place that in the last photo is called "The Little Mermaid Creek". In the near future I will make a small post about this place.

Wherever the pipe came from, it makes a great point of interest among these yellow trees. Love all the photos. The one showing up inside the pipe is a fun one to see.

Thanks for the feedback.)

That is impressive tower, despite of so many years it is still there and still recognizable. I love old legends and that is really creepy. I believe people like to create amazing storied about some old buildings that makes it more interesting and brings more curious people to that places. I like these paintings on the wall of the tower, seems like teens like the place and as it is normal nowadays try to leave their signs where possible. Thank you for this story and you pictures the one of inside of the tower made me curious how it was done, did you climb up or was it done from bellow?

Thanks for the feedback.)
I wanted to climb to the top of the tower, but I failed. There is nothing to grasp and climb.
I also like the legends, but it is interesting, the tower was built relatively long ago (a hundred years is not a very long time) and there are no documents.
Most likely, they were lost in times of revolution and other events of that time.

I find it very strange that there are many stories about this tower and it's not really clear which one is true. If the tower would be 500 years old, then ok.. but 100 years old.. hmm.. it should be somewhere documented in my opinion.. The first story sounds the most believable to me :)

I like how it's built in the forest. It fits it somehow perfectly. It looks like it was built to compliment the forest around it.

Thank you for bringing more photos and showing us around. It was a nice tour! :)

Thanks for the feedback.)
There is an assumption that the documents were lost during the revolution and other events of that time.
Doubts in the first version are caused by the fact that if it really was the Rotman factory, there would be more chances that there would be more mention of him.
And if it really was a nameless entrepreneur, then the documents have not been preserved.
But in any case, this mystery is for local ethnographers.)

Too many stories on one tower. Lol! I guess there is some sort of reality or connection between the stories... Well, I guess we may never find out the real story...

The tower looks sort of ruined but it still has a great view, the guy who did the design did well with it (Rothman?)

Your photos are beautiful...

Thanks for the feedback and photo rating.)
It is possible that all the stories are part of one. But the popular rumor has altered everything and added some facts.

The design of the tower is standard, if you search the Internet for the technology of annealing limestone - you can see similar towers on the drawings.)

Oh well, rumors! 😀 Everyone just gotta believe what sounds right to their ears. Lol

Oh, really? That is really cool, will check that.

howdy from Texas chanych85! say this is such an interesting post. I like all the different versions of the story and the tower itself is very interesting being located out in the woods by itself it looks like, so the entire post is unusual.
Is this tower hard to get to? It doesn't look like a civilized area.

Greetings from Russia, @janton :)

Thank you for rating the story. In my opinion - the first story is too embellished, and the third - more realistic. The place is not so far from the city - you can easily reach by public transport. The road takes about 40 minutes. True, a couple of kilometers will have to go on foot, but the roads there are normal.

thanks so much for the additional information!
