New Zealand #4 - Driving to the West Coast - Arrowtown and the Crown Range, South Island

in #travel7 years ago (edited)

The last day of March, 2016, and we leave Queenstown after a few interesting days to start our roadtrip through the South Island. There is just too much to see and do, and because the road network is channeled by mountains, large lakes and the sea, you can't always get there from here. So our itinerary unfortunately has to pass on some wonderful destinations like Fiordland and particularly Milford Sound. We are already starting to realize that 4 weeks won't be enough time to see everything, and that we will have to come back to New Zealand one day!

Queenstown seen from the top of the Crown Range in the Southern Alps.

Sunny with some cloud, going up to 19 Celsius in Queenstown, but according to the morning weather on TV 'coasters are not happy because it will be a bit roughish due to a system coming across the ditch'! Translated from New Zealand English - 'people on the west coast will see stormy weather off the Tasman Sea'. Now about our destination - it took us a day to drive through the Southern Alps to the west coast, but there was a lot to see so I'm going to break it into two posts, this one covering the first half of our day, and the next post taking us the rest of the way.

It is a short and pleasant drive to Arrowtown, a well-preserved Gold Rush town with a wonderful main street and many 'listed’ national heritage buildings.

A bit further on from Arrowtown we opt to take the scenic route over the Crown Range, with absolutely stunning views of the mountains. Going up there are lots of slow switchbacks, but unlike our experience in the interior of Portugal the previous winter the roads actually have guardrails! Since it is the scenic route there is lots of traffic, and occasionally we get caught in a convoy of caravans, but everyone is courteous and cautious. At one point a heavy goods lorry pulls over to let everyone behind through.

The scenic route...

There is a Lord of the Rings filming site a short hike outside Arrowtown which we passed on, but I'm sure this winding trail is in one of the films...

... what do you think?

We end our morning having our picture taken by another traveler, and do the same for her -

Good morning from Canada! Working great guys!

Good morning, yes, it seem to be smooth sailing now!

You've done a fantastic job, lots of work I know but getting used extensively now. Played catch-up this morning and saw all the digests I missed - a really good feature! Meeting some more awesome travel bloggers and adding to my to-do list lol!

Haha, well thank you, I'm trying my best! Definitely not possible without the support from the team though!
Yes, we're almost at 500 markers, can you believe it?!

How many where there when you first asked me to help beta test? My senior's memory is failing me but I don't think there were many pins out there...

Thanks for this, it reminds me of a lot of places in the United States!

Glad you enjoyed it! We ran into a lot of terrain that reminded us of western Canada. Most of it was quite unexpected, and also changed really quickly in some areas, say from rainforest on the coast to mountains like these only a few hours inland, if that.

Thanks for the resteem!

You're welcome. I resteemed it because I have always been fascinated by New Zealand and why the filmed The Lord of The Rings there.

Have you looked at my first 3 posts, especially the second one with the land of orcs shot? I figure in about 10 more posts (maybe more) we'll be at Hobbiton - fun tour!

Nice its a two week trip right?

2 weeks South Island, 2 weeks North Island. If we do get back we think 2 months will be required!

Good point!

Awesome post of your trip, I had almost forgotten about Arrowtown, but your photos reminded me of my visit there many years ago such a quaint little town

So - I'm showing you around NZ? lol my Kiwi friend!

Indeed I have been most everywhere there but some places not for a long wile last visited arrowtown about 20 years ago

Arrowtown is delightful!! What beautiful mountain.views. Did you watch LoTR when you got home to see which places you recognized?

Bought our son a 'where LOTR was filmed' book at Hobbiton so read it before I gave it to him, and then when we got home watched them all! The book is very good. And we did recognize a lot of the places. Unfortunately many are remote, and you can only get to them by helicopter, but there are companies that do ground tours and helicopter tours!

The hunter and his weapon in the last picture! (and I'm not talking about your wife ;-))

Congratz, your post has been read, approved and resteemed by a human!

Telephoto zoom - the traveller's best friend! Particularly when there are mountains. Glad you noticed, proving you actually do read the posts lol!

What a wonderful route! Love the scenery, especially the mountainous scenic route... the rustic town scenes are great too! Heyyy, great pic of you both!! :D

One of my favourite shots of us - can you tell we are really enjoying our trip!

Definitely!!! Heyyy, who wouldn't?!! Hehehe...

Beautiful pictures! I hope to see more from you. Keep Steeming!
