Australia #12 - The Great Ocean Road and the Twelve Apostles, Victoria
After Uluru (https://steemit.com/travel/@brightongreg/australia-7-the-red-centre-uluru-northern-territory)
and the Sydney Opera House (https://steemit.com/travel/@brightongreg/australia-2-sydney-opera-house-new-south-wales-australia)
the Great Ocean Road and Twelve Apostles was our next 'must-see' destination in Oz.
About 240 kilometers long, winding almost its entire length right along the coast, the Great Ocean Road was built in the 1920s to provide work for Australian veterans of the Great War. The road is actually a war memorial, part of the National Heritage List of outstanding natural, historic and Indigenous places.
We get away early from Warrnambool, and it's only a short drive to the start of The Great Ocean Road. It takes about a half hour to reach the sea, and initially we're unimpressed as the first two views we look in on are unsigned, with small parking areas, and one requires a long walk in to the lookout. But then we arrive at Loch Ard Gorge, named after a ship that foundered there many years ago with only two survivors, who were swept into the gorge and then somehow scaled these cliffs to find help. Stunning sandstone cliffs enclose small coves, with the surf breaking at the entrances. There is lots of parking, well-constructed paths and stairways, and lots of signing explaining the site.
After spending some time there we go on to The Twelve Apostles, the centre-piece of this stretch of coast. Like Loch Ard there is more parking and information, including a very nice Visitors' Centre, even toilets and a small café, with helicopters departing every 15 minutes or so for an aerial view. Also like Loch Ard there are well-developed paths leading to railed viewing walks and outlooks where you can see the magnificent Apostles, the tallest being 45 meters high, from various perspectives. A truly awesome place! Unfortunately the sea continues to erode the limestone stacks that form the Apostles - actually only eight remain - and over time they may all disappear!
Mid-20s Celsius, and windy enough off the Southern Ocean for brightonbonnie to wear a light jacket!
Looking to the east there a couple more limestone stacks. You can see the erosion at the base of the one on the right -
From the Twelve Apostles we travel through rolling hills that remind us of our time in the Schwarzwald, in Germany, except they are less wooded, and only see the Southern Ocean a few times.
At Apollo Bay we enter yet another different part of the road, right along the water, very twisty with some elevation changes. The traffic opposite coming from Melbourne is very heavy, but in our direction most of the time there are only a few vehicles, so driving is relatively easy though sometimes we get stuck behind a caravan before they pull over at one of the frequent slow vehicle turnouts.
Eventually we reach our new caravan park at Anglesea, where I discover I've made my first booking mistake: we are staying two nights, including a chill/laundry day, so I booked an upscale unit, the door on the right, unlike our Jayco boxes very modern and stylish. Except it's designed for folks coming out from Melbourne who don't want to self-cater, and there's no cooking facilities except a microwave. Reception finds us an electric fry-pan and we make do! We also get some DVDs, watch The Rabbit-Proof Fence and try to watch Australia; the first is very good and we can relate to it given our brief trip into the Red Centre, but the second we think is a bit over-done and we both fall asleep before it ends.
Typical caravan park communal kitchen, where we could have cooked our meals if necessary!
Walking on the nearby beach, watching surfing classes before we chill for the day and do our laundry.
In the evening brightongreg, a huge basketball fan, watches the Australian National Basketball League Grand Final, game 3 of a best of 3 between Perth Wildcats and New Zealand Breakers, which Perth wins decisively. As the game ends a beautiful white cockatoo comes to the back patio, sitting on the crossbar right beside our screen window, and responds to our voices and whistles. A nice way to end our chill day in Anglesea!
Please join me for my next post - we avoid Melbourne due to our no-city rule and head further east to Lakes Entrance.
PS - if you've enjoyed this post please check out the previous 11 posts in this series, and the 3 before that as we started our 90-day roadtrip in Tahiti! Probably 20 posts to go in Oz as we head further east and then north to the Gold Coast and Cairns, then on to a month in New Zealand!
Thanks to @benfenson for watching over my Oz posts!

Good morning! App working fine today - I think you're right about getting all the bugs out.
Hey hey, I think so too! I did notice you made a small mistake here though: the closing tag should be d3scr not d3sc (it seems to still work now, but it might cause some problems later down the line)!
Sloppy cut and paste - my bad - fixed.
My favorite part of the world @brightongreg. LOVED seeing the Anglesea beach ~ My late teens summer playground. How I would love to revisit. Loved your images of the Twelve Apostles too. 🦋
Thanks for feedback. Glad you liked seeing your old playground - my post yesterday I had someone I follow who actually stayed in the same caravan park as us in Warrnambool before starting out her trip along the road - small world!
Lol... Hi, Alison @allyinspirit - it was me! Hahaha - what a small world indeed! And I know both Alison and Greg... Pity I didn't get to Anglesea though, maybe next time. We went inland after the Apostles and ventured into the Otway National Park instead... Another wonderful discovery!! 🙂
Maybe we should plan a reunion? Is there anyone else you know that visited there either for the summer or on a trip?
Alas, not me... Maybe Alison? 🙂
We too avoid cities when travelling. There are a few exceptions but more often we take the less travelled path. Too bad the Twelve Apostles are eroding. It will very different without them. Amazing scenery and lovely photos. Thanks for sharing.
Normally we enjoy cities but after we left Sydney we decided given all our travels we'd seen enough museums and churches, and would spend our time in smaller places closer to people and landscapes. Glad you are enjoying this!
I am immensely. Thank you for sharing your experiences.
Ooohhhhh, you got wonderful shots of the Twelve Apostles that I didn't! I was most upset with myself - we stopped at almost all the viewing points before the Apostles (yes, including Loch Ard Gorge and even made it down to the beach!) so much so that by the time we got to the Apostles, my camera battery was down and only had my friend's handphone camera shots... Thank goodness for that anyway. And it was already evening too... But no regrets, I loved every bit of all the stops we made, so it wasn't so bad. And the weather picked up halfway so we had wonderful blue skies and a lovely blue of the ocean! Brings back wonderful memories of the place... Thank you!! 😊🎕
Good morning Canada time! Glad you liked the photos and could revisit your memories.
Wow! You're early... 😃 Good morning!! Happy to... Thanks, again!!
Always up at 5 am plus or minus a bit. Drives my wife crazy! She manages to sleep much much later so I don't know why me getting up bothers her?
Lol...
woohoo what a fab trip :D thanks for sharing hun :D
Glad you like it!
Great post mate! Its nice to see pics from the area like that. You only ever see that iconic shot of the twelve apostles but never the surrounding environs, which is a shame because there's some great photographic potential in that place. I had no idea :) thanks for sharing this with us!
Glad you liked it - I'd never heard of Loch Ard Gorge and it was very interesting, both photographically and the story too, so you're right!
I'm "dying" to photograph the twelve apostles! Wondrous photos, Greg!
Thanks so much for the feedback!
You're so welcome!
Dear Greg, could I ask you a big favor?
I have been nominated to participate in the Minnow Accelerator Project, https://steemit.com/minnowsupport/@accelerator/six-of-the-best-map25-minnow-contest-vote-now-win-upvotes and would love your support, so please vote for me by upvoting my intro there or simply writing the word vote in a comment under my intro.
Could you do that for me? I'm truly grateful!
Thanks!
I'd be happy to but I can't find your intro - the link above has your name which just takes me straight to your page. When I did this for Melinda she had posted an intro piece. Am I missing something?
Hi, I guess I still have to learn how to manage those things... Thanks for your endeavors. Anyway the post is the first of my blog and the link should be this: https://steemit.com/minnowsupport/@accelerator/six-of-the-best-map25-minnow-contest-vote-now-win-upvotes
The objective is to put a vote on my comment / intro on the post and a comment including the word vote.
thanks in advance!
I think I have management problems too - didn't realize if I scrolled down that link I would come to your intro post until just now. But it is now done, sorry for the delay. Good luck!
No worries at all... I'm learning too, but Steemit seems to be more complex than the other networks... always learning, hopefully! Thanks a lot!
No problem. Thankfully there always seems to be someone in your network who can help you when you have an issue. Take care!
You have my full attention now!!! This is so absolutely fascinating, with those amazing rock formations, the water, the holy wow of it all.
I cannot thank you enough for bringing this kind of beauty to my doorstep! Resteem so others do not miss it. This is worth a look or three!
I want to go see the Twelve Apostles now!!! You have me wanting to go today!
Glad I could bring this to you!
