Travels With Connie #78 Florence, Wisconsin

in #travel6 years ago

Sometimes I know exactly where I am going. In that case it’s easy, pick a route and go.

More often I have an idea where I’d like to end up, and generally speaking a direction to go.

Once in a while I just follow the front wheel and see where it takes me.

Woods2-1.JPG

Just to remind you and me where I am and why. I laid up for a week near Florence, Wisconsin to spend time with Sam, clear my brain by walking in the woods, and write a little. Though it was over half the mileage I would cover this summer, this stop marked the half way point in my mind. When I left Florence, I was headed home, no matter the direction I was travelling.

Parked Connie-1.JPG

Connie spent a couple of days under the nose of Erv's trailer hiding out from the rain. This is about as naked as you'll ever see Connie, so excuse her modesty. I had the left saddle bag off to make it easy access, you can see it in the extreme left center here. The right bag could stay, it is generally tools and bits that have to go but are hopefully not needed.

Florence Sign-1.JPG

Florence, Wisconsin is an attractive little unincorporated burg in extreme north east Wisconsin. It is almost straight north of Green Bay. Year round population is less than 1000 but that number swells significantly in the Summer. The nearest real city is Iron Mountain, Michigan.

Florence-1.JPG

Florence is the county seat of Florence County Wisconsin and the city and county buildings are, well, attractive. The buildings are mostly over 100 years old and have been carefully preserved and modernized.

Florence Jail-1.JPG

This is the original County Jail. It's no longer in service except as a storage area, but it gives you an idea about how the property has been maintained. You can see behind the jail that there are lots of spaces in Florence, Wisconsin which adds greatly to it's attractiveness to me.

Florence 6-1.JPG

The front entrance to the Court House. Part of what you see here is new, part is 100 year old construction. All the upgrades were done with attention to detail and to making new construction fit the old style.

Gone Walking-1.JPG

So we need to go for a walk, Sam and I. He's waiting more or less patiently for me to catch up. Sometimes he waits, sometimes he is just gone.

Thanks for coming along for the ride!

Looks like a lovely green space to explore. :)

It is a lovely place. And my friend is a botanist so I learn a lot every time I go for a walk with him.

I love the old small towns and the old buildings. Seeing those pictures of your's reminded me of a trip I made to the University of Notre Dame in Indiana, all the original buildings there were built with bricks that were made from a clay pit on the property that had a yellow tint to the clay. The clay never left the site, the had a kiln right there where the bricks were molded and fired. Then taken directly to the building that was under construction and placed.
Those buildings in Florence have that same sort of tint to me from my memory.
Thanks for sharing and sparking a memory.

With out even asking my expert, I'm sure the bricks were at least made nearby. Right where Erv's place is it's very sandy, left over grindings from the last ice age. But you don't have to go far to find the items that were ground :) Includes clay deposits and rivers and lakes to hold that clay.

looks like a great place to stop and enjoy the surroundings while ducking some rain.

It was really cool to see Sam, I genuinely like my doggy. And the walking and seeing is just terrific. Erv and I cut down and cleaned up 3 30m fir trees that were threatening his trailer. And walking through the woods and meadows with a botanist is an experience to say the least!

Florence looks such a cool place love the buildings

It's little and touristy but so pretty. Lots of trees and spaces, which is good in my opinion.

YEs I agree lots of space and trees is always good :)

Isn't the population there like 6000? If so must be great! Hope you all are having a great time. Hope you've been well and have an awesome week.

The full time population is listed at 2000 in the last census. It's just not very big...

Hey sir your journey posts are always exciting and leads to beautiful destinations.

God bless you dear sir.

Thank you! I love going and I just love the sharing of the photos I take.

Have a good walk, the pair of you, but you better head back to AZ soon, Wisconsin and Mi winter's are not a great thing...unless you really like snow? Maybe you do? :)

Spoiler Alert. We are home, just catching up on the summer's travels! There was one day where I KNEW Snow wasn't far away, and that is the precise reason I moved to Arizona. :)

Nice pictures! Looks like a really cool place. It always surprises me when we head to that part of the state just how close to Green Bay we really are. It makes sense why so many people in the UP are Packers and Vikings fans.

I'm telling you, every place, and I do mean EVERY place has either the Packer's logo or a life size of Aaron Rodgers or both. It's almost unbelievable.

Yeah it is pretty sad. You would think there would be a little Lions love...

That jail sure looks like a castle and not like a jail hihi but it also reminds me a little of university buildings with its architecture. Your front wheel sure did lead you to an interesting place like it always does. 💚

I'm sure it looks better from the outside than the inside :) It is an incredible suite of County buildings and in a town that isn't even incorporated. I love those old courthouses and the square that is inevitably around them, and have a fair selection of photos of them.

Thanks for stopping by Petra. Always appreciate it.
