Travel Diaries: Sea Turtle Conservation - Malaysia

in #travel7 years ago (edited)

Why not vacation with a cause?

One of the many reasons I adore Bubbles; They run a Turtle Conservation program and operate their own hatchery! Sea Turtle nesting season begins in April and ends late August.

The hatchery is covered with roped netting from above and fencing for extra protection.

The eggs are dug up when the mother is back in the ocean and put into buckets in sand. This way wildlife can't get to them, increasing chances of survival for the little hatchlings.

Guests are able to adopt a bucket of eggs, which will be tagged with their names, number of eggs, date laid, and estimated date of hatch.

Where all Turtle Talk's are held.

Every day after dinner, guests are treated to a talk on Turtle Conservation. A hit with children and adults!

The turtles that beach on Bubbles are Hawksbills and Leatherbacks, critically endangered and a sight to behold.

The Bubbles website has further details.
Feel free to get in touch if you would like to get involved!

PSA: 🐢Please do not support tour companies that let you stalk turtles with bright lights, camera flash and huge crowds while they look for nesting ground, or those that let you touch these turtles when they are in a catatonic state.

Also, please NO touching sea-life when snorkelling or diving. Many photos of people doing this on Instagram and it is upsetting because these "photo-ops" have serious consequences if they only cared to know. Turtles face enough threat from humans and in their natural environment, you wouldn't want to personally add to it.
