Travel Diaries: Diving the Perhentians, Malaysia!
Any scuba diver’s here?
I’m a scuba junkie and love the ocean! It’s a feeling I can’t possible put into words, but can be closely described as serenity.
Diving is a different world. I think it changes you, on some level. Awakens that childlike wonder, keeps you in awe of Life.
The Perhentians are known for it’s brilliant dive spots. The South China Sea is teeming with life!
I highly encourage anyone who’s been pondering a dive licence get certified here. The waters are calm, great for beginners. Sea life is abundant and will not disappoint. The beaches, stunning.
I chose to dive with Quiver Dive Team, as it was recommended by a friend although there are a couple other dive companies on Coral Bay (on Perhentian Kecil).
- First, because Quiver is absolutely committed to protecting sea life and ensuring PADI rules are obeyed (i.e.: No touching sea life, no harassing sea life, no breaking coral, safety procedures, etc).
- Second, because the instructors have worked years on islands the world over, so they know what they’re doing.
- Third, because it is right next door to Shari La Resort!
My instructor happened to be from Montreal which was a happy coincidence. I’ve been craving poutine since I’ve been in Malaysia so, really, it’s all I could think about on the dives.
