Travel With Me #9 - Taipei Zoo (台北动物园)

in #travel6 years ago (edited)

Taipei Zoo was never the plan to visit during my trip to Taipei but it just seems the right timing to went that day may be due to the weather is cloudy, making it the perfect weather to go for a walk or maybe is just me woke up late 😅 and randomly decide a place to go.

Reaching Taipei Zoo

Take the Blue Bannan Line (板南) from Taipei Main Station to ZhongXiaoFuXing Station (忠孝复兴站), interchange train to Brown Wenhu Line (文湖) to the last station Taipei Zoo Station (台北动物园站) and take the Exit 1 of the station. Walk another 2 minutes straight and you'll reach Taipei Zoo Main Entrance which is super huge and you can't miss it for sure.

The trip will take estimated 25-30 minutes of travelling and cost around NTD28 (EasyCard) or NTD35 (Single Journey Ticket).

History of Taipei Zoo

Taipei Zoo is currently 104 years old (as of 2018) and it has been moved from its original location, Yuan-shan in the northern suburbs of Taipei City to this current location, Muza District in the southern suburbs of Taipei City due to expansion and limited space on the original location.

The Old Zoo was officially closed down on Aug 15th, 1986 and the new Zoo was officially opened on the New Year's Day of the following year.

How Big is Taipei Zoo?

Taipei Zoo has an area land of 165 hectares (7,920 double-decker bus parked together with no gaps) which 90 hectares are open for the public to visit. Within the zoo, there are many exhibition buildings (the Education Center, Penguin House, Koala House, Reptile House and etc), exhibition areas (Formosan Animal Area, Children Zoo, Desert Animal Area, Australian Animal, African Animal, Bird World and etc) and outdoor nature observation area.

To be honest, I can't finish walking the entire Zoo and skipped some parts of it due to not enough time and quite tired walking, remember to wear comfortable shoes as there is a lot of walking required.

Entry to Taipei Zoo & Animals

I highly recommend visiting Taipei Zoo in the spring or summer because the animal will be more likely to roam actively around their area as oppose visiting during the winter, which I did. Animals are more likely sleeping or hiding in the grassy area which will be hard to see and took a photo.

Entry fees are NTD 60/adult and NTD 30/student with ID, alternatively, you can enter using the Easy Card without queueing to get the ticket which saves up time. Be sure you have enough credit on your Easy Card before enter, you can reload them before exiting Taipei Zoo Station.

Beaver chill swimming on the pond

Not sure are they donkeys or another species of horse 🤔

Koala, only view from a far, cannot be pet like Perth Zoo

Hippo yawning with a huge mouth

Magellanic penguins in their exhibition area, they didn't swim thou

Ring Tailed Lemur, King Julien from Madagascar the movie 😆

Rhino

American Bison

Flamingo enjoy their bath on the pond

This Sun Bear is very active walking around the exhibition area

Formosa Monkey

A lot of other animals are just hiding away from the human, but luckily I still manage to see a handful of them. Be sure to fill up your stomach before starting the trip as, you will be walking a lot and you need the strength you have to finish off the day.

Great post @aaronleang. The hipo looks a little angry 🤣

Thanks @travelfusion 😆 Haha but look cute thou when their mouth is close

Wow! Thanks for the zoo trip! Love it! Because of your funny way of introducing the animals... I now only remember Banjo... uhm... Bongo... LOL... hahahahaha... Love the video too! The penguins there are really obedient while waiting for their turn to eat... Unlike those penguins I see in the Langkawi Underwater World... The penguins there are more hungry I think... They rushed towards the zookeeper with the fish! tip!

Never been to Langkawi still 🙈 I should visit there sometimes.

Thanks for the tips

Yes... Quite a good place to visit... If you visit the Oriental Village, that's where the Langkawi SkyCab is... You will need to spend one whole day there... So many awesome spots to take photos... The 3D Museum is there too... I got no time to take photo... So sad...

I can see a monkey got lost and boarded a train to Taipei main station 🤣

The zoo is also good for families. We spent a good half day there waving hi to the animals and creatures. But what followed the zoo visit was a foot massage :-)

Haha true @prch, the walking is much more than shopping in a mall 😆. Lucky I wasn't needed for a foot massage that time

Lovely post about the Taipei Zoo. We are tossed up about zoos in general. Some are great and some are awful. The photo of the penguins reminded us of our trip to Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Thailand, where the penguins were camped up in a small glass display unit - all 20 of them. It was also unfortunate that one of the penguins had a baby that day and the other penguins (probably jealous, hungry or thought it would be just another mouth to feed) pecked it to death in front of a few viewers. The mother was frantically trying to save the baby by running away with it and shielding it, but there was no safe place to save it when the rest of the pack is against you.

Where were the zoo keepers or staff? No where to be seen.

The purpose of a zoo is to be educational and serve as a research centre. However, we seen too many that serve it's purpose as a for-profit and an entertainment centre.

Sorry, we didn't want our comment to be a downer, however that picture did remind us a lot of that day and the sorrow/angry we felt. To end on a positive note, your description of the Taipei Zoo's information is amazing. :)

Yea true @travelling-two, some zoo are poorly maintained which cause the animal to suffer 😭.

The animals are amazing. Thank you for sharing the photos and video. I should have visited the zoo when I was in Taipei..

Thanks @yingzoe, there will be always next time when you revisit Taipei 😊
