TODAY IS NATIONAL MOONSHINE DAY!

Every day provides us with opportunities to celebrate. Today I invite you to celebrate Moonshine! Some Craft Distilleries are now legally making and selling Moonshine, Whiskey and Bourbon.

Whiskey and Bourbon from Damnation Alley Micro-distillery, in Belmont, MA. While technically not Moonshine, because they aren't clear and are aged, they are something you could make if the government allowed home distilling.

MOONSHINE

Moonshine is a distilled spirit,
you may not want to hear it,

without a federal permit,
a crime you will commit.

Moonshine has been defined,
so, now you can find,

it if you explore,
in a liquor store.

Moonshine is clear unaged whiskey,
making it without a permit is risky.

Moonshining has a long history,
let me dispel the mystery.

It started with the 1791 Whiskey Tax,
that put a burden on farmers backs.

They turned their crops,
into whiskey shots.

It was easier to transport,
and they had a family to support.

But a tax must be paid,
on all whiskey made.

Farmers hid their stills,
to avoid paying the public till.

In 1919, the Volstead Act,
gave home distilling the ax.

When prohibition came around,
liquor was hard to be found.

Moonshiner saw big, easy money,
their product was crummy.

The alcohol was often tainted,
drinking it could leave one ill fated.

In 1933, our politicians,
repealed Prohibition,

but the ban on home distillation,
remained across the nation.

Claiming safety as a guise,
to keep tax revenue as the prize.

An ancient craft,
got the shaft,

a tradition lost,
at freedom’s cost.
