Tiny House Episode 8: Moving the Tiny House

1Even only half built, the house looks a little too heavy for this old D250. Otherwise it towed well.

With the exterior finished, the next thing to tackle on the tiny house build was our electrical system but first it was time to move the tiny house. Aimee and I decided that it would be a good idea to move in with my parents while we finished the house. While we still paid my parents some rent, this would still save us a significant amount of money each month that we could put towards building materials instead of other living costs.

While we really enjoyed living at the acreage we were renting we had been finding it increasingly difficult to save up for the land we wanted for our homestead. Rental costs and real estate have really skyrocketed in Alberta and I don't think we are the only residents who have struggled to save up the necessary funds to acquire real estate.

The Move

We wanted to move the house when there was little traffic to impede so we got out of bed early on a Saturday morning to do the deed.

2My dad lowers the trailer onto my old truck.

It took about an hour to tow the house to it's new location. We didn't tow at much more than 80km/h which ended up being fine with the route we took and time of day. At first, it was a bit nerve wracking. Would it tow well? Would the trailer sway or pull to one side at higher speeds? Everything ended up being fine and we parked the house at it's new location next to my parents garage. Being close to the garage was another benefit to the move as it would make grabbing tools and storing materials easier.
