The Only TIL that Matters Today

in #til8 years ago

Today I learned that Steemit will be “forked” as long as so many people want it to be just like Reddit. What in the actual fork! What happened to innovation?

How about we try a little harder to make this place better than Reddit – which sucks, by the way – instead of trying to emulate it?

Having seen what's coming at SteemFest, I can tell you it doesn't really matter what Steemit does, there are going to be a lot of different UIs coming to satisfy all kinds of users.

Yep - I've seen one of them that's in the works. It looks pretty good. They probably should have led with it.

However, it's still sad to see so many people calling for more Reddit here. We've had enough Reddit. I suspect that's one of the main reasons why this UI isn't very attractive in the first place - why we haven't seen more adoption on this site, and why the attrition rate is so high.

I hope there's a good one in that mix. I'm with you on this Steemit goes Reddit business. I appreciate that this specific social platform is all an experiment that simpy lets the underlying technology continue to develop and be tested. And other apps may be what builds that long lasting value of the blockchain. But, still... ugh.

I'm going to stay focused on what I want out of my engagement here - and base my "positive outlook" on an appreciation that this will Grow The Pie Bigger. Inevitably, there will be communities focused on interests, like forums on Reddit, groups on Facebook, and communities on Google+. Until then, I'm girding up for a slog through the mire of banality to find posts that I value. Here's a happy face to feel better. : )

I would like to know if steem and steem power will be in use for all new UI-s . Or we gonna stuck with them on steemit only? Thanks for answer.

They will not only be on Steemit, they are part of the blockchain, largely unrelated to UI. An app designer might choose not to highlight these aspects, but they are there regardless. When you add value to the blockchain by creating content you are compensated in Steem Dollars and Steem Power which are derivatives of Steem (for example when gold used to back dollars those dollars were a derivative of gold because they could be exchanged for gold). User interfaces are basically just different "skins" or designs that encourage you to create and consume content in different ways. But the reward mechanism is always the same (as far as I know).

Thanks again.

It is a good place to start. What if we could have 4 Steem type social media platforms linked together. With shared usernames and crypto-currency. Possibly large tabs at the top that make it easy to switch from a reddit-like (Steemit), Facebook-like, Twitter-like, and instagram-like sites. Then a marketplace, and who knows !

It is a good place to start.

I disagree. Reddit's UI is a terrible place to start for a social media site. Reddit isn't popular because of it's design and functionality. It's popular because it has been around for 11 years and has served as a link-spamming site that has been able to build up high SEO due to its linking/voting functions. It isn't popular because it's appealing and has a large user base. Its "popularity" is based on visitors, not users.

Regarding the multiple front-end sites - there is some of that on the way...

Reddit has been very successful in many ways.
Steemit has potential to be far more awesome and I hope that is actualIized.
For that to happen, it would have to be different of course to be far better.
Take the best parts of everything and build the "ideal" platform.
Of course better and "ideal" are mostly subjective.

Reddit has been successful at being ranked highly in search engines due to their voting mechanisms - much like Steemit. Other than that, it's a niche "social media" platform. They don't have anywhere close to the number of active users as most other popular sites. Also, their design is absolute garbage and has been for 11 years.

We can do better. We should expect better. We shouldn't be trying our hardest to be Reddit. Not even Reddit wants to be Reddit. They may be happy with what they have, but they'll always be on the outside looking in when it comes to social media. That's not something that ought to be duplicated here. If we want revolutionary, we should build revolutionary.

Reddit has both good and bad attributes. IMO steemit should assimilate the good parts. Just because you don't enjoy something, doesn't mean a ton of other people do. Why do we have to immediately jump to negativity all the time?

RS and UV for you.

I am still learning things as you know from the discussion on my page the other night but I am still glad you took some time to talk to me about things there.

I did similar research on your alphabetical order question you raised on stats on here, and found it not the case. Similar issues to what we discussed where my user name ( starts w a b) - was ranked last out of 7/8 others on a search result above me, whose names were well below b in the alphabet. I was determined to look into it after you took time to talk with me.

Appreciate your work on here, you know more than me on this stuff and I see your name a lot.

I put up this post today which I think you will laugh at , seeing what you know online lol.... have a good day!

You can write a TIL post and do a bit more than just dropping a link, can't you?

Actually, most of the TIL posts I have read feature a couple of paragraphs with original content.

I suppose we can do anything we want. How the curation groups want to handle that stuff is an entirely different issue.

I happen to believe that all of these different curation groups are probably achieving the opposite of what was originally intended for this site - the best content rising to the top. More people might be getting bigger payouts, but more isn't necessarily better. Oh, well. Band-aids on band-aids, I guess. Let's not stop the bleeding.

I guess the curation group will actually curate. In this case, why should it be a problem?
