Hawaiian Tiki Gods like a good time too.

In ancient Hawaii during the Kapu System there were four main Gods or Deities. The four were Ku, Lono, Kane & Kanaloa.
To speak of these four in a religious sense was to speak of the body, the conscious mind and the spiritual or super conscious self. Kanaloa was known as a combination of all three and known as a superior person. To explain further, Ku was known to symbolize the body, it held memory and automatic patterns. As a Tiki image his eyes are open. If the Lono or conscious mind didn't direct it in matters it was unfamiliar with, it just couldn't function. Lono is the conscious and creative mind, it can direct Ku but must use Ku's eyes and experience to get feedback so it can guide properly. Lono as a Tiki image has it's eyes closed. To speak of Kane is to speak of the Spirit and Aumakua. Kane is not always obvious to the individual. He is God that lives within you and he has connection to everything. He usually only becomes known to you when you have drifted off of your path and he sets you straight. Aumakua can have bigger meanings also. There can be family Aumakua, a group Aumakua, a world Aumakua. The Aumakua will stay with you always. If you have created a group spirit with a bunch of individuals, that spirit will stay with you. If you have been a crew member on a ship or a member of a platoon, that spirirt will remain with you always and you can always ask it for help or advice. It will always help because you are a part of it. Maybe it will show up in a dream or as intuition but it will always be there for you. In Hawaii there is really nothing called a Tiki but is referred to as Ki'i and translates more closely to Image. The Ki'i were more thought of as close family members and approached for advice and protection. Offerings in the form of food or floral preparations were given when the Ki'i were approached. These were the four main Deities of Hawaii. There were many others that were descendants of the original four.
Like all religions there were Priests/Kahunas to enforce the rules and protocol of the Gods. As you might assume, they took it to another level of abuse.
When the Kapu system was over thrown by the Queen's Keopealani and Ku'uhumanu after Kamahameha 1's death so did the old religion die.
For better or worse these Tiki's found their way to many European Museums by way of trading and military ships. On their way they were celebrated by many Sailors toasting them with grog. These may have been the original Tiki Bars as they sailed to their new homes. IMG_0110.JPG
