Fireflies in the Woods - Day 97 - Daily Haiku

Fireflies in the woods
as they light up the darkness
they make my heart sing

Cori MacNaughton

Okay, I'll admit it, it's cliche, but it's also true. I can be sad, or even in a foul mood, but the moment I see fireflies, all is forgotten, and all's right with my world.

I am so thrilled that they thrive here, along with bees and hummingbirds, and so grateful that we don't have huge agribusinesses spraying noxious chemicals in the area to harm them, so that they can continue increasing their numbers year after year. Life is wonderful.

Which reminds me of the very first firefly we saw after moving here, in March, which would usually be far too early for them to emerge. When Marek spotted its lazy meandering path, we were both trying to figure out what the heck could move in such a way until we realized that what we were watching wasn't miles away, but maybe five or six feet away, just off the end of our front porch.

We had been enjoying an uncharacteristic hot spell, which was enough to bring the little guy out of hiding, though he was the only one we saw, so he probably didn't locate a mate before he got zapped by the cold again. C'est la vie.

So in honor of the reemergence of our fireflies, here is a second haiku written four days ago, on the 18th:

Tonight we saw a
firefly on our windowpane
Spring is indeed here!

So Happy Spring, everyone, and may it be a harbinger of brighter days for us all. Peace!

Melaleuca, a company that has been making natural, eco-friendly

I was introduced to them by a co-worker in 1990, lost track
of them, and was thrilled to find them again about a year
and a half ago. I strongly recommend their products.

All words and images are my own.

This photo, of our woods looking south toward the barn and studio, is the section of woods where the fireflies are often most active and visible, though it was considerably darker tonight as I was walking back from our barn.

This was most likely taken with my LG V10 smart phone.

The photo of our dog, Lolo, and our late cat, Miod, I took as they were cooperatively begging at the dinner table, despite our longstanding rule of not feeding them from the table.

You can see how much that deterred them both.
