Five Minute Freewrite - Day 1 - writing prompt - Sugar Bowl

Five minute Freewrite – writing prompt – Sugar Bowl

Our taste was similar in many things. In coffee, we both preferred heavy cream, and far preferred half-and-half to milk.

When it came to sugar, however, no. I like my coffee with none. He likes it with four spoons. Yuck.

On occasion, when running around doing whatever it was we were doing, such as getting ready to go sailing, we would each grab the wrong cup, take a deep drink, make faces, and sputter like motorboats. Double yuck. Undrinkable.

Then we would each hand off the offending cup to its rightful owner, take another drink, and sigh in contentment. Some things don't change.

The sugar bowl was a bone of contention more than once. He complained of gaining weight, yet would not see the connection to requiring that everything be sickeningly sweet. He didn't feel well, yet failed to see a connection there either.

Ah, well. I saw the connections, made my own choices, and ultimately left, choosing to be alone rather than with someone who blames the world for his problems, rather than looking himself squarely in the mirror.

Not that I haven't also done so, on occasion, but I choose not to live there.

Okay, I completed my first official 5-minute freewrite . . . and then, belatedly, realized that I used yesterday's prompt. Oops.

The writing did actually take me five minutes, though I did correct for syntax and punctuation afterward, and changed a couple of words.

So I'll do another later, but for now, here you go. This was fun, so thanks for that, @mariannewest.

The photo is a bit of a cheat, which I took about five minutes ago, because while it does depict antique kitchen implements, none of them are actually a sugar bowl. So sue me. ;-)

From left to right, we have my dad's antique coffee grinder, which I actually used for years, until I got my first Braun coffee grinder, at which point I retired this one. It takes some serious muscle - and time - to grind coffee with this. But yes, its cast iron mechanism still works like a champ, and probably will for centuries after I'm dust.

Next to the coffee grinder is an antique porcelain salt cellar with a wooden lid, that belonged to my maternal great-grandmother, and which I've always dearly loved. I remember when I was a child reading the book "Miss Bianca and the Salt Cellar," about a lovely mouse who, as I recall, made her home in the salt cellar. I would love to find a copy of that book again.

To its right is a ceramic container holding wooden chopsticks, which are not antique, but, in my kitchen, are absolutely indispensable. I've been using chopsticks since I was a little kid, and Asian food simply doesn't taste as good to me when eaten with a fork. Call me a traditionalist. ;-)

Finally, an English Blue Jasperware pitcher, a gift from my Aunt Fran, because she knew I loved the stuff as much as she did.

I placed these and more treasures on top of our kitchen cabinets, in hopes of keeping them safe from the cats, who promptly chose to get up there anyway, or at least Edit and Miod did. Miod's favorite napping spot was on top of the cabinet above the sink. Bear hasn't ventured up there for a long while, and to my knowledge, Musica never has, or at least I've never caught her at it.

All words and images are my own.

The photo of our dog, Lolo, and our late cat, Miod, I took as they were cooperatively begging at the dinner table, despite our longstanding rule of not feeding them from the table.

You can see how much that deterred them both.
