What is Decentraland?
Decentraland is an open-source intitiative to build a blockchain-based virtual reality world. It uses blockchain technology to claim and transfer virtual land, keeping a permanent record of ownership.
In Decentraland you can purchase parcels of land (tiles) on which you can build anything, from static 3D scenes to dynamic applications. Other users can be hosted on your land, on which you determine the way they interact with eachother and the environment. Since the land is in your ownership, all the value you create for other users you may keep yourself.

Why Decentraland?
It is their opinion that a public VR world should be ruled by open standards, shielded from the agenda of any central organization. Virtual land owners will have full control over the content of their tiles. Blockchain technology makes this possible as it is a permanent immutable record of ownership.
Issuing a token will allow them to incentivize content creators, developers, and users through bounty programs, artist grants, and a team which helps to execute the vision. Holders of the tokens will be stakeholders of the network and therefore incentivized to create a virtuous cycle where content draws new users and users draw new content creators.

Okay so there is no denying this is incredibly cool, and I will absolutely buy a small amount just to experience it, but I am failing to see the value of it as a way of making money.
A very good question indeed. Remains a bit vague, however there should be enough ways to monetize it..
Well if there is a way to earn dividends from owning the tiles in a similar way that proof of stake works then I can absolutely see value in it. If it is just cool tech for the sake of cool tech (like almost all VR games at the moment) then maybe not. It's definitely one to keep track of.
Perhaps in the future, we'll just be connected to our favorite virtual world all day. Like each virtual world is a country you could visit

Have you heard of the game Dual Universe? It's nothing to do with blockchain but it's a similar concept. Everyone in one persistent universe, claiming land, completely editable voxel world etc, it's still in pre-alpha but looks like it has great potential.

I have high hopes for Decentraland, will be participating in the buy-in tomorrow. It should be interesting to see how valuable the land located near the first Genesis city becomes. It's hard to gauge how quickly Decentraland will grow before seeing what the early land developers create.
