Facebook Will Mail Out Postcards To Verify US Election Advertisers

in #technology7 years ago

Facebook will send codes by mail to verify the identity and location of those US users who wish to contract electoral advertising through its platform. In particular, the social network will apply this measure to those ads that seek to promote specific candidacies.

In an unexpected turn, one of the world's leading technology companies surrenders to one of the oldest communication systems in existence, sending correspondence, to ensure that there is no foreign agent trying to harm the electoral processes of a country.
Facebook's global policy director, Katie Harbath, has announced that the company will begin using postal letters to verify the identities and locations of US users who wish to contract advertising of an electoral nature. These shipments will contain a code that will be necessary to provide for those ads that try to promote a specific candidacy for a federal office.

Harbath, who made these statements this Saturday, in the framework of a conference of the National Association of US Secretaries of State, has clarified that this verification will not be necessary to contract political advertising based on specific issues, according to Reuters. However, the directive has qualified that the measure "will not solve everything", in statements to the aforementioned media.
With this verification, Facebook intends to face the criticisms received to its management during the campaign of the presidential elections of 2016 in the country, in which entities linked to the Government of Russia used the social network to disseminate propaganda content to accentuate the division of political opinions, according to the American intelligence concluded after an investigation.

The announcement of Katie Harbath came a day after special prosecutor Robert Mueller revealed an accusation against 13 Russians and three companies in the country for an alleged conspiracy to interfere in the US presidential election through social networks, promoting the candidate Republican, Donald Trump, and hurt his rival, Democrat Hillary Clinton.
US legislation prohibits foreign citizens from donating money or carrying out any kind of economic expense to carry out actions linked to federal, state or local elections in the country. Sending codes by post has been considered by the global policy director of Facebook as the most effective method to prevent Russians or other actors from buying ads by posing as someone else.

Harbath has not specified the exact date on which these postal items will begin, but expects them to be underway before the elections for the Congress to be held next November.
