Apple AirPods and The Future of Apple [Product Review]steemCreated with Sketch.

in #technology7 years ago (edited)

In today's video I review Apple's AirPods and provide unique insights into the product itself as well as what it says abut the future of Apple.

TL;DR

My Opinion

I like the AirPods and think they will be a very successful product for Apple going forward.

The Key to Understanding the Apple's Method

I believe the key to understanding the AirPods is that they are designed to remain in your ears all day. That's why they're tight enough (and light enough) to remain in your ears, while loose enough to enable you to still hear the world around you as well as anyone talking to you. This might seem like a bad thing to people, but remember that Apple isn't trying to design the best headphones, they're trying to design a product that you can wear for as long as possible that enables you to interface with your computers in an efficient and pleasurable way and makes you more committed to their brand and their range of products. To that end, the AirPods are a great product.

What the AirPods Say About Apple's Future

The AirPods prove that Apple understands that in the very near future (probably 5-10 years) our eyes and ears will be constantly connected to computers. The AirPods are far and away the largest step toward that (inevitable) destination than any other company has so far released by quite a lead. Once other companies like Samsung begin to grasp this, they will more closely mimic Apple, however, as usual they will be playing both catch up and Apple's game.

No Such Thing As Bad Press?

Believe it or not, people's polarizing reaction to the AirPods is a good sign for Apple stock. Apple has never delivered a successful product that wasn't polarizing when it was first announced. Even the iPhone, arguably the most successful product in history was almost universally ridiculed. What Steve Jobs managed to infuse into the company was that it didn't matter what people said about your product when it was released, but whether they would buy it and keep buying it for years. People are constantly complaining about how little Apple changes its designs and components and how high their profit margins are, while simultaneously deriding their products the moment they are released. What they miss is that the reason that Apple can charge such high margins is because they slavishly adhere to this strategy.

The Apple AirPods are very good at addressing 90% of modern headphone use-cases. They have good enough audio, they're good enough at making calls, Siri dramatically increases the feature set of the headphones (with practically infinite room for improvement in future generations), and the battery life is great. They've managed to do this in a very small form factor (fewer raw materials) with very few components (processor, gyroscope, speaker, microphone), all of which can be incrementally improved while lowering their cost as production is made more efficient and increased sales improve economies of scale.

In Conclusion

People can complain about the AirPods till the cows come home, it will only help them sell. Why? Because people don't complain about crappy products. People don't talk about crappy products because they're irrelevant. People complain about Apple products because of the cognitive dissonance which is created by them believing that Apple makes bad products, despite their popularity (which they describe as "irrational" as if they are the arbiters of "reason"). They tend to be people who are fixated on specs and believe that human beings make their purchasing decisions based on "rationality." Humans don't care about specs, they care about whether things work, feel good, improve their lives, and signal to others that they are intelligent, creative, successful, competent, etc. people. The more people complain about Apple and the more shrill they become as sales and profits increase, the more free advertising Apple gets out of them.

And that's why Apple is the most valuable company in the world

Thanks for the thorough review! I've been thinking about getting these since I originally saw them. I heard a very well respected product reviewer say it's the best new product out of Apple since Steve Jobs passed away, that's pretty high praise. I'm also thinking really seriously about the Apple watch but might wait until the next gen.

My pleasure! Interesting, I hadn't heard many positive reviews, but then I guess I didn't look too hard. The moment I saw these I was like, "WANT!" I tend to have products or websites that I'm just WAITING for someone to create and then the moment I see them I just think, "Thank you universe." Steemit was one of those things, and so were the airpods :) I'm having the same debate about the Watch. I just want a bit more functionality. It just seems like a notification machine, which I don't really need or want right now. If they improve the health tracking or something like that, I might try it out. Just not quite compelling enough yet.

I'm the same way about technology, if something has the potential to enhance my life I want it. I'm on the phone (or listening to podcasts) a lot, mostly on the move, these would be perfect. Yes, I really struggle with the Watch. It's at a price point where it really has to deliver something extra for me to justify it. If the rumors are true gen 3 coming out this year will have cellular capability, round face, and extra batteries stowed in the band.. If it would truly allow me to keep my phone tucked away It might be time to buy it.

Ooo yeah, I would prefer a round face, and the battery life was one of the less impressive aspects

Really comprehensive review! This is not the type of thing I have seen before. Reviews often cover the technical aspects and do some basic usability stuff. I have to say I am surprised how good they look when warn - I thought they would be bigger from the photos.

Also the video quality is amazing. Did you buy a new camera?

The bit in the middle about Steemit in the middle is one of the best summaries and explanations of the platform I have seen. I think if you could do a cut out version of just that it would be great to put up on the home page and on steemithelp.

I hope you do more of these product breakdowns because it could be a great brand. You could give it a specific name like Andrarchy Analysis - but something better to indicate a different kind of review.

Glad you liked it. Yeah, it's funny you mention that, I actually really like how they look too! I think they look goofy from the side (which is maybe what everyone is obsessing about) but I think they look straight up cool when head-on and to be honest, sometimes I find myself admiring how they look in the mirror :/

Nope, it's my a7s with a 50mm 1.8, but I usually use the a7s for the side camera and my buddy's a6300 for the straight-on camera since it can shoot in 4K which allows me to digitally zoom getting two shots out of one. Because I use that camera to shoot a medium-shot (body and head) as well as the close-up (with optical zoom) you don't get that nice blurred background that you get when you shoot with the 50 1.8 especially with the full frame sensor of the a7s.

I like that idea. Maybe I'll just do a separate, more refined video about the subject of how Steemit allows you to trust content creators.

Thanks for all the great ideas!

They look amazing. I think the side one is on your phone though so you can't expect the same results. A7S is full frame OK - those Sony's are pretty impressive. I suspected a prime lens because the image looked beautiful! The combination of full frame and prime is very nice.

Yeah unfortunately my buddy took his a6300 to Miami, so I settled for the iPhone. Yeah I love the low light capabilities and the full frame, but the autofocus is garrrrrrrbage

Really that is surprising. I didn't realise they had that problem.

Yeah, on the a6300 and a6500 the autofocus is absolutely amazing. We got a cheap 35mm 1.8 and it's absolutely gorgeous. They do face tracking, and enable you to adjust the focus speed. The focus doesn't hunt it just nails the target. It's awesome. The thing that sucks about the a6300 is that it has no stabilization though! The a7s II is much better, but still extremely slow and hit-or-miss when compared to the a6x00s. The a6500 has 5 axis stabilization, really tempted to sell my a7s and get that one.

Might be the resolution. My full frame D800 has a much higher resolution than the D7100 I use and it just seems slower at everything not just saving but focusing too.

The only thing I don't like about airpods is they are pretty small, and I would be pretty much guaranteed to lose (probably just one of) them. Just like I do my other headphones all the damn time...grrrr. I'm so absent minded with things like this. :D

That's a common fear about them and I would actually say that practically speaking, what you're really likely to lose is the case. The thing is, the moment you remove them from your ear, you put them in the case, so I'm not actually worried I'll lose a bud. That being said, the case is so small, that you definitely could lose it. But then, it's not like I'd want it to be bigger just so I don't lose it. But yeah, that's a valid concern. Thanks for commenting!

I don't know about their hearphones but I just convinced an OSX fan to move to a Windows based device. The hardware of the HP Spectre x360 beats everything apple has in store by a big margin and is much cheaper. Apple is doing bold experimental product and one day I believe they will fail hard and fast.

Mac desktop - Fail (too little too late)
Macbook - Fail (Dongle fiasco)
Macbook pro - Fail (too little too late)
iOS - Lagging behind android on many levels like customization
iPhones 7 - No Headphone jack
Apple Watch - Gimmick with no battery life.

Basically everyone using iOS and OSX has to bend over and pay premium to use their product. I'm so happy not to have any attachment to their products.

What an amazing post and thorough review. I just followed and upvoted. Great job. I need to make videos too! Where did you get the logo and what program do you use to edit the video?

Yeah you should make videos! If you want any tips feel free to reach out.

Here's the logo:

I use adobe premiere pro, but iMovie is really all you need (I recommend NOT using fancy transitions between shots). If you're looking for something more powerful and still free, check out DaVinci resolve.

Thanks so much.

Resolve in an incredibly powerful editor. Its industry-standard colour suite is the icing on the cake.

Nice review. I agree that authenticity has a unique value to it.

Those ear buds still look ridiculous though. Unless you've gone some tinsel around and want to look like Tina Turner in Thunderdome. No accounting for taste, of course. And 24 hours of charge is huge.

Very nice! I need to get me some of those.

I rarely say this about products, but I love them. But then again, I guess I don't care if it looks like I have a toothbrush sticking out of my ear :) Honestly, I barely even use them and I STILL keep them in my ear all day. If they were water proof I'd probably leave them in in the shower. I've actually heard that they're "unofficially" water proof.

Awesome. It's a matter of time until we all get a chip implanted in our brains at birth. We might as well enjoy these tools that are available and learn to use them in good ways. Glad to hear these Airpods are worthwhile.

Now I feel like getting one too. On my side, it definitely encourages me to listen/curate more music for my side gig.. which is useful.

Amazing review - two awesome products in one! Lol.

I agree with your points - honest reviews / contributions etc. Steam game reviews should be Steem-powered by the way..

Thanks! Yeah, that would be dope.

Thanks I am going to watch this on my Apple TV. Apple is always a big draw on Youtube - that is how I actually first started using their stuff!

Excellent post!

... Apple is TWICE as valuable as the second-most valuable company in the world

Well, not really. Apple capitalization today: 676 billions, Alphabet (Google): 560 billions, Microsoft: 488 billions.

Thanks, yeah I corrected it as quick as I could. I guess I rushed through that part :/ Thanks for the correction

Great review man!

Thanks! Thanks for reading and commenting! And the ... bitmoji?

My thumbs up of course! Lol
