ADSactly Technology - Is facial recognition technology in classrooms something we truly need?
ADSactly Technology : Is facial recognition technology in classrooms something we truly need?
There are a few benefits that can be had from facial recognition technology being incorporated into classrooms.
This however, doesn't mean that its right and there are certainly privacy issues to consider.
Of course when it comes to students, for the most part they are justifiably horrified at being monitored as they move throughout the school during the day.
The question needing to be asked is, does the good outweigh the bad?
Well there are some things that would make teacher's lives easier. For example, a roll marking system could be implemented quite easily.
Teachers could simply look at a tablet or iPad and confirm once a day instead of being signed off on a paper roll. It all boils down to how the technology is applied.
There is some evidence that a lot of good could come from using the technology in classroooms to a certain extent but personally, I'm not quite sold.
Trials have already begun in independent schools in NSW and up to 100 campuses across Australia. According to the developers, the technology promises to save teachers up to 2.5 hours a week by replacing the need for them to mark the roll at the start of every class.
Furthermore I don't believe using the fact that we already are subject to this technology in everyday life should be used as a logical justification that it should be used in schools.
Many students now have smart phones that recognise faces right now. There are also downloadable face recognition apps for Android phones and iPhones. So face recognition is already in our schools.
If you are unfamiliar with the topic in general, basically facial recognition technology applies the use of a camera to capture a face and match it with a database to determine identity.
First, the face or faces must be detected and localised in the camera frame. Then, face images are aligned and rescaled to a standard size. Finally, these faces are matched against a database. Matching is almost invariably performed using artificial intelligence technology.
I'm definitely not arguing that technology isn't cool. It certainly is cool. But I remember going to school and having a certain amount of privacy. Many would argue that this comes at the expense of safety which may be true. But it all boils down to how much importance we place on privacy. Do we really want to live in a world where big brother sees and knows everything we do? Can we trust that the same big brother wouldn't use that information for nefarious purposes?
These are questions that definitely need to be thought about before proceeding further in my opinion.
Many have said we are currently living in a 'golden age' of innovation when it comes to facial recognition technology.
The main reason for rapid adoption is recognition accuracy has improved astronomically in recent years with 20 times better accuracy from 2014 to 2018.
But just because something can be used doesn't necessarily mean it should be used. What kind of future do we want to make for people. Is technology such as the one described in this article something that will bring about a utopia or more likely a dystopian wasteland?
Humanity has always had a sort of way of leaping before we look and for the most part that strategy has worked quite well as a species but it only takes a big enough fall to end it all. As a habit going forward, lets make sure to look before we leap!
What are your thoughts on this topic?

I agree with the doubt you introduce about the convenience of using this technology in classrooms, @techblogger. Perhaps it could be used at the entrance to the institution, but not in the space where the specific educational act takes place. I don't think it favors the teacher-student relationship, which is the basis of the educational event. In addition, there are the dangers derived from that absolute control over individuals, which you synthesize well in the Orwellian image of the "Big Brother". Thank you for your excellent post, and @adsctly for spreading it.
My opinion is that the bad overweights.
I only see one really good reason to use it, today there is nearly no system to prevent students to send one who writs the tests for them.
Bad is that with this technique if this is Implemented in the first place they can do whatever they want with it monitor not only what I do at University but also could use movement pattern detection to monitor psychological health and Interaction between students.
I agree with you. In my opinion it puts a lot of added stress on students without enough justifiable benefits to make it worth the cost but in terms of investment and in terms of psychological detriment. Thanks for your thoughts.
Thats so useful , facial recognition technology looks fascinating. Introduce it to a classroom is a good deal . Thanks for sharing such a percious info :) support
Inspiring post
Face recognition technology is one of the technological advances that can be used for various purposes. Handling criminality, staffing data certainly feels helped by this technology. A leap from conventional data collection to a higher stage so that the cuttings holder can easily use this technology.
however, in the world of education, especially the use of face imposition technology in class, in my opinion there is an impact of good and bad. In taking values, avoiding cheating on this learning presence will help teachers in assessing.
However, from educational psychology, I see there are weaknesses that occur with the use of this technology. When teachers, teaching lecturers will lose their sense of humanity. all depends on technology. In fact, in my opinion education is not just seeking knowledge. but there are other things that are humanitarian in nature. An educator teaches students who are also human. Touch of humanity is needed to make students become fully human.
Greetings, warm hugs become more touching to students and don't need technology too much. rather, by not using this technology we feel a good closeness between teachers and students. The interactions that occur become more human.

I'm not exactly sure why facial recognition technology is needed in the classrooms. Surely the best facial recognition device is already in the classroom. It's called a teacher. If a teacher can't recognize his or her own students, then he or she needs to either go back to teacher college or consider another kind of job. The article above doesn't give very good reasons to implement facial recognition. It simply says, in short, "it exists, let's use it". That's not a very good reason.
I don't see the need for facial recognition technology in classrooms. Would it serve to control, to supervise or to manipulate? Maybe it is used in other environments and by other people, could be considered prudent, but I really do not see the need to use these mechanisms in schools. If they want to know what kind of people they have as students, ideally there should be supervisors, teachers, who do that work. Every day I am impressed by the amount of private information that the technology of each one of us has. Without realizing it, we give confidential information to certain devices without knowing where it will end up. Last year it was made public that a website in Russia was given the task of publishing the faces, with their respective names, of those attending demonstrations in favor of opponents of President Vladimir Putin using facial recognition. Some technologies, in dangerous hands, can also be a danger. Thank you for this post, @techblogger
