Team Australia new recruits: update 14/07/17: Get your lawn bowls on!

in #teamaustralia7 years ago (edited)

Happy Saturday Aussies! I’m still in the past – the down side of living on the arse end of the time zone, but hey, what can you do? On that, I always think: should I put the date it is in Australia in my title or the date where I am? Hmm.

Not much exciting going on in Panama except what's happening to the road outside my apartment. I don't know what they are doing but it's noisy and the traffic is awful.

Now I’m just going to talk about stuff going on with Team Australia.

  1. I’ve been trying to make more of an effort to chat to you guys in the Minnow Support Project on Discord by going to bed slightly later than my usual Grandma time. You should join too. It’s fun. Obviously there’re more of you in there during the day when I’m asleep so come in and say hi and make some new friends.
  2. The referendum is today (Saturday). Have your say on whether you think we should continue to follow all Team Australia members or just the ones with similar interests now that we are growing substantially in size.
  3. @gohba.handcrafts is hosting a lawn bowls comp, which basically involves you taking a photo at your local bowls club. The idea is to get everyone off their laptops for a few hours and get outside. Drinking cheap beers is of course optional. The winner will get 5 upvotes from the @discordia bot. And since it’s the weekend, you’ve got time to re-watch the world’s greatest bowling movie – Crackerjack – for inspiration. Here's a reminder for you in case you've forgotten.

Then get down to your local club, get your shoes off and get your game         on.

Although I want to win so don't try too hard.

Formal notices

Until the results of the referendum are in, existing Team Australia members, please go here and follow everyone that’s been added since you last checked.

Be sure to check out @centerlink, who is busy putting Aussie-battler tax dollars to work in the form of dole payments for posts, as well as showcasing Australia's most worthy dole recipients. And don’t forget our very own Minister for Welfare @ausbitbank has created the @discordia bot, which you can use to increase your upvote moolah. Some of the proceeds will support @centerlink so give it a try.

I've already discussed the the awesome Minnow Support Project but if you haven't checked it out, the details on how to join are here and here.

Candidate 1

Name and bio

@adamfahey was born and raised in Sydney and still lives there with his family. Although he likes Sydney, he says he’d much prefer to be up north living in a small town on the coast with a warmer climate.

@adamfahey is an illustrator/ artist who sells most of his artwork either on microstock websites like Shutterstock or print to order websites like Zazzle. He’s also a gardener in his spare time, with a thriving veggie patch in his back yard. He is planning on uploading some of his artwork, merchandise and gardening projects to steemit.

Fun fact

“I do a lot of Australian themed illustrations.”

I like your illustrations. They are fun.

Candidate 2

Name and bio

@kyliewhyte is from Perth where she lives with her husband, son and dog. She is a Registered Nurse but is interested in all things natural health related. She also loves being outdoors and keeping somewhat fit by playing field hockey.

@kyliewhyte is passionate about family, natural health, nutrition, getting outdoors and building immunity, gut health (me too since I've been hearing about it), lifestyle, freedom, and animals. She’s also avid traveller who looks forward to introducing her son to new places and experiences.

Fun fact

"I was a National Rhythmic Gymnast in my day."

Cool. One of my yoga teachers here in Panama is a former Venezuelan gymnast. Her flexibility is through the roof. She rocks the handstand like no body's business. I’m very jealous.

Candidate 3

Name and bio

@jaycobbell lives in Queensland and works in youth detention centre as a youth worker. When he was younger he spent some time in prison and believed this to be his life path. Before serving time @jaycobbell hit rock bottom and suffered a five month deep depression, which was the hardest thing he's dealt with. However, prison was a great opportunity to learn about himself. At some point, he also started practising Buddhist meditation techniques and ended up living in Buddhist Monastery for approximately eight months. @jaycobbell credits Buddhism as a way of getting rid of the baggage, anger and blame from his life.

@jaycobbell's goal for steemit is to gather resources of all types, including finance, psychology, drugs, religion, philosophy, and fitness, then filter it so you only get the good stuff.

Fun fact

“I do mountain biking, rock climbing and Jui-Jitsu in my spare time.”

Nice. I can't argue with physical activity. It's all good.

Candidate 4

Name and bio

@patriciakm lives on a farm in Ringarooma (92km NE of Launceston) in Tasmania with her partner. In 2014 they gave up their careers and became ‘new farmers’. This meant extensively researching, analysing, discovering, testing, and planting. Now they are nearing their lifelong vision of living off the land and no longer being Farmers V:1.01 in beta test mode.

@patriciakm also runs the Facebook group TasArcFarms – a place where her granny-on-the-land voice can be heard. She is a dreamer, whose ark has materialised to allow rescued animals to roam free and native animals not to be chased.

Fun fact

“I have been a new Aussie since the 1970s, originally from France.”

Joyeux 14 juillet! (Pour hier.)

Candidate 5

Name and bio

@gidget is a self-employed business owner from Sydney.  She is also an adrenaline junkie and has a video on her blog of her doing all kinds of crazy stuff like skydiving, bungy jumping, rally car driving, etc.  That said, @gidget’s first passion is horse riding and participating in dressage competitions.

@gidget is also well travelled and currently blogging about a US road trip she took in the good old days (circa 2013) when the Aussie dollar was at parity. (Man, I loved the Aussie dollar being at parity. It was SO GOOD for travelling and internet shopping.)

Fun fact

“I’m a tragic travel junkie with a severe adrenaline addiction. It’s debilitating but so fun and worthwhile.”

I went skydiving a few years ago after being coerced into it. It was fun and terrifying at the same time. I’m not really sure I ever want to do it again.

Candidate 6

Name and bio

@badastroza is a South African who moved to Torquay (Point Break anyone?) with his wife in February 2017. He says they have come to Australia for the long haul and are on their way to permanent residence.

@badastroza was a freelance journalist for about 15 years, covering everything from videogames to politics to surfing – the latter having taken him literally around the world and allowed him to see some amazing places.  His steemit goal is to interview interesting people, starting off in the games industry, but most likely spreading beyond this as time goes on.

Fun fact

“From 2013 to 2017 I worked for a videogames company that saw me spending nine months in China, nine months in Iceland, and almost two years in the UK.”

That’s pretty cool. While a lot of people live in the UK not many can say they’ve also lived in China AND Iceland.

@sirknight, please add these new members to Team Australia.

The rules for joining Team Australia

If you’re not yet a member and want to be, this is what you need to do:

  1. Follow all the existing members @teamaustralia.
  2. Vote here for our resident steemit witness @ausbitbank.
  3. Comment below or DM me on steemit chat or Discord that you want to join.
  4. Link your introduction post so I can find out a bit about you. If you’re new to steemit you'll have to write one so use the introduceyourself tag to help boost your following.
  5. If it’s not mentioned in your introductory post, tell me which city and country you’re in, cos let's face it, a lot of us live in Australia's fourth largest city - London.
  6. If you’re not Aussie tell me why you should be a teamaustralia ambassador.
  7. Tell me a fun fact about yourself. This can be anything. For example, maybe you run a successful business, or you have eight kids and three dogs, or you rode your bike across Amercia, or you won the blue ribbon for javelin throwing at sports day back in high school, or Toadie came into the pub you work at one day and you served him a beer, or, maybe you can fit 55 maltesers in your mouth like Ed Sheeran can. It doesn’t matter what it is, I want a fun fact about you!

Once I receive this information I will try my best to write a good introductory paragraph about you for the official Team Australia membership updates. So the better your information is, the better I can make you sound. Where relevant, please use the teamaustralia and australia tags to promote your work. I will try and post weekly updates unless there is a lot of interest, in which case I will try and post sooner.
