TacoCat's TrEats #38: The Crispiest Fried Chicken Rice! ๐Ÿ—

Hey Steemit!

I'm back with another Local Dishes contest this time, since it's been quite a while since I've done one of these. I'm really happy people have been enjoying my Japan food posts though, so I'm definitely gonna be doing more of those too. Here's my previous Steak Lover one if you wanna check it out.

Anyway, I've been waiting to write about this stall for a while because it's one of my favourite places to eat in Singapore!

The stall I want to share today is called Yes! Nasi Kukus, and they serve mouth-watering fried chicken on top of freshly steamed rice.

Directly translated, Nasi Kukus just means steamed rice in Malay. It doesn't really sound like much, but what's really special about this Nasi Kukus is that the rice is made to order, and steamed in individual aluminum bowls.

Unfortunately I couldn't find much information on these steamed rice cups, but I believe it helps seal in the flavour and fragrance of the (coconut) rice while making it soft and slightly sticky.

I'm a big fan of soft rice and I'm an even bigger fan of their signature fried chicken nasi kukus! ๐Ÿ˜‹

I love fried chicken, and Yes! Nasi Kukus is the only local place I've found with the perfect fried chicken! All their chicken drumsticks are cooked to perfection; crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside and quite a sizable piece too.

The fried chicken goes so well with the curry and the freshly steamed rice. I believe all their sets come with half a boiled egg, sambal chili and acar (pickled vegetables).

They have quite a few different sets but we've really only eaten their signature fried chicken set (despite going there at least 3 times) because it's soo goood!

So I did a bit of research and found that Nasi Kukus was introduced in the Klang Valley by economic migrants from across the stateline, and I believe it was meant to be an economic meal for labourers (similar to ramen back in the day). Now it's become such a staple in Malaysia and Singapore, a typical meal can come up to RM8 or 5 SGD. The owner and chef of Yes! Nasi Kukus used to work in Mujur Catering which they claim is a renowned catering company in Kelantan. Now they've brought their special Nasi Kukus to Singapore and have 3 different outlets in Woodlands, Jurong and Punggol.

The branch we always visit is the one in Woodlands, located within a new air-conditioned food court called Woodlands Glen.

It's a little out of the way but the food court itself is quite nice and comfortable, and there are some other stalls there too.

Our favourite roast pork rice stall used to be here too but they recently closed down! A new roasted meat stall has taken its place, but I doubt they'll be as good, so I guess we'll be eating a lot of Nasi Kukus every time we go back there.
