Mama's Kimchi (Wuppertal, Germany): A Tasteem Review

in #tasteem6 years ago

Okay... in what is becoming a bit of a peculiar habit, this is the second Korean restaurant that I'm reviewing for Tasteem whilst in Germany! I don't know about anyone else, but when you have been eating out for quite some time (when I'm working on tour, every night is a restaurant meal...), you start to crave something that is a little less salty or oily or just something to settle your stomach.

For me that means a rice based meal!

So, at some point in time on a work tour, I will be seeking out some form of a Asian restuarant to get my rice fix!

The Space

t8.jpg

As you can see, this restaurant is a fairly brightly lit and newly renovated area with lots of seating available. On the evening that we went, it wasn't very full... in fact, it was doing more of a trade in take away orders rather than sit down diners.

For my taste, the place is a bit too brightly lit, and with the white walls and tables it was a bit too much!

t6.jpg

As appears to be the norm these days, there is the open kitchen area. Although, in their defense, Asian kitchens often had this before it was trendy!

t9.jpg

... and if you are brave and have knees that can handle it, you could try the traditional seating! Our group wasn't brave enough!

The Menu

t10.jpg

The entree and dessert menu was a nice selection of Korean dishes. We ordered a few plates of Kimchi and Mandu (Korean pan fried dumplings) as starters. After dinner, we found out that they had run out of ice cream though...

t11.jpg

The mains menu is a usual suspects list of all the most recognisable Korean dishes, ranging from the marinated meats (Bulgogi) through to soups and my evergreen favourite, BiBimBab.

The Food

t4.jpg

Dumplings with dipping sauce are always a must have dish for any Korean restaurant visit. There really is nothing better than a dish of these pan friend dumplings in either vegetarian or meat fillings. Not pictured is the Kimchi which was superb! Nice and spicy!

My friend ordered the Bulgogi, which came with various picked side dishes as well as the much needed rice. I had a little taste, and I have to say that I was impressed! Sometimes, the taste of the sauce can be overpowering, but in this case it was just perfect, just adding taste rather than dominating completly.

t3.jpg

My own go-to dish is the BiBimBab... a rice dish that is basically a mix of many things. Oddly enough, it was served in a cold bowl. Normally, it is served in a hot clay bowl which means the rice underneath is still cooking and gets nice and crispy! However, apart from that, it was very good!

Drinks

t5.jpg

A little special mention for the range of rice and other types of teas that were available. We all ordered something and they were all unusual but quite nice.

This was the corn tea that I had!

The Experience

I really hadn't expected to find a decent rice based dish in a random town in Germany. However, Google (and my friend) managed to deliver up a really good suggestion! Mama's Kimchi was definitely a pleasant surprise and a real life saver for my stomach!

This is definitely a must visit place if you want a pleasant change from German food!

Just a word of warning, they only accept CASH here (or maybe crypto, I didn't ask...), so don't forget to visit the hole in the wall before you start ordering... or you will be doing the dishes!

That place sounds very yummy! 😃

It really was, and a completely unexpected find!

Astonishingly, I've never tried Korean food, probably because there are too many good Indian restaurants in Glasgow. There are some Korean ones too, so it's about time I did!
I think it looks a bit sterile and brightly lit for my taste, but the food looks interesting.

Oh, I miss good Indian food... Although there are a couple of nice ones here, they aren't really the best. There is a great place near Paris Nord which is worth visiting if you have time between trains...

The decor was a bit bright, but yes I would have to say, Korean food is definitely worth it if you can find a good place Nb

I totally get the outside food boredom... Sometimes I rather just eat plain bread...

I always travel with some dry seedy hard crackers... Just for the time I need something a bit more cleansing...

I get what you mean.

The place, food and tea sounds great!!!

It was great! Perhaps a little on the small side, I was still a little hungry after, but that meant there was room for dessert in a different place...

howdy there Bengy! this is a fine review, I'm glad it was good food. How is German food? It sounds like you get tired of that fast.

German food is quite tasty and nice too, but it I find it is heavier on my stomach, especially the restaurant fare. I'm getting old!

Shoot, you ain't gettin old! But I would think that being in the orchestra that you wouldn't be able to have any gastronomical problems so no matter what age you'd have to be a little more careful on the road.

Yes, it is good to try and remain in good shape... there is nothing less fun than feeling sick in front of a large audience....

haha! that makes me sick just thinking about it!

Klasse Review 😀. Hoffe hast dir schmecken lassen. Und endlich mal einer aus NRW ✌️😀
