Let’s Bring it Home

There were a lot of interesting things that I learned while researching this topic and it really helped me understand the many sides to the Feed-in Tariff. At first I was so mesmerized by the Feed-in Tariff because of all the progress it has helped achieve for Germany when it comes to renewable energy. As I started to research more into the topic, I began to discover Germany has some of the highest electricity prices in the EU. Because of this I figured the government wasn’t making energy affordable to the general public and was using this as a longer term investment which will pay off later. Turns out I was wrong in thinking that electricity was not affordable. While I only talked to a small number of people, it seems the consensus is that the price is reasonable. Eventually the cost of electricity can be lowered by reducing the taxes and surcharges but at the moment, citizens have accepted the price. Many more interviews would have to be conducted with a variety of people from different demographics to get a full understanding of the public’s thoughts on the subject. It was great to be able to look at Germany’s policy and what the country has been achieving in the field of sustainability, since I have only looked at the United States.
