Surfing with the aggressive locals in Sumbawa...
The locals in Lakey really know how to surf.
They surf top to bottom and rip their perfect waves apart. Its their home, and only some are welcome. If you want good waves you have to be prepared to handle the atmosphere in the water. They surf in groups, almost like a gang amidst the ocean. Yesterday the waves were good, so i tried my luck and took out the camera...
I felt the intesity as soon as i hit the water - this guy gave me the dead eye stare whilst also letting me know who was number one.
Theres no point paddling for a set wave - youre here for the scraps only and you should be grateful for them...
Avoid eye contact at all times, unless you want trouble
They will teach you a thing or two if youre keen to get on the world tour.
Dont even think about making any conversation with them - unless you want to face the consequences back on the beach
Needless to say i was pretty shaken up by the experience, and i paddled in soon after to lick my wounds. Thankfully the swell hung around so i managed to sneak back out once they left and i was lucky enough to get a few snaps from Deen, one of the local photographers.
If youre keen to follow my Indonesian surf adventure il be posting up part 2 of A two month surf trip over the next week. The kids (and older locals) here are really beautiful people. They are always smiling and very welcoming, in and out of the water. The swell is building over the weekend and i have no doubt they will be out there shredding over the next few days!
