Cleaning Up The Streets Of Steemit- The #SupportHonesty Challenge

Too Much Spam!

I think that we can all agree that there is simply too much spam on the blockchain. Many new users don't really understand the concept of quality over quantity because they believe that content with low rewards should also require low effort and vice-versa, leading to posts with little to no work put in once they see how tiny their payouts are. The way that Steemit was designed essentially gave first adopters a huge advantage which leaves the rest of us to fight for the scraps- not only in terms of the rewards pool but also of followers because people only have so much time, attention and voting power to give. This results in tons of low quality content from small accounts, all scrambling to get a piece of the STEEM pie.

HowMuchEffort.jpg

We all need to do our part in combating these low quality spam posts by taking advantage of the new separate down-voting pool when we spot abuse.

Great Content Gets Lost

In this flood of non-stop spam much of the good content seems to get buried. Fear not because most engaged content creators will find a way to promote or boost their posts in order to stand out and get the attention they deserve from the community. However, what generally what happens to people that are new to the platform is that they get less attention and quickly lose interest or feel discouraged. Additionally they are competing for rewards for spammers who are trying to game the rewards pool and maximize what little STEEM Power they have. It takes hard work and consistency to slowly build a loyal following plus some knowledge about how Steemit works in order to take advantage of different avenues of post promotion. By reducing spam we can all do our part to help good content shine through.

Auto-voting Abuse

With the use of auto-votes and curation trails some users have found ways to get rewarded for low quality content, or posts that are barely worth noting. These are posts that get zero comments from real people and usually contain very few words and perhaps a picture or two. Do you think that these posts deserve to be up-voted by their followers who trusted them to create quality content and not spammy posts? I don't.

AutovoteAbuse.jpg

So to prevent and combat this I suggest regularly checking out the people who you are auto-voting (which you should be doing anyways). I stopped auto-voting this person because of their lack of effort.

New System, New Strategy

Hopefully with the new changes to Steemit that are about to be implemented we will see a shift in the behaviors across the platform. I am looking forward to seeing the effects of the curation/author reward split in addition to the separation of up-vote and down-vote pools.

Effectively when they change the way that rewards are split it will incentivize more curation and less posting. This should in itself reduce the number of spam posts while increasing the number of spam comments and re-steems theoretically.

The separation of the up-vote reward pool from the down-vote pool is a huge step towards giving power back to Steemians because we don't have to take away from our Voting Power in order to penalize spammers and plagiarists. This is something in my opinion that should have been done a long time ago but I understand why they did not, since this mechanism can be abused to bully and harass others with flagging. We shall see how things turn out soon...

Auto vote is great! But great point to check to see who you are actually auto voting. You could be voting on hate speech, trolling, or like you said, straight spam. Thanks for you contribution to this challenge, and great work

Yeah this guy that I stopped auto-voting used to put out GREAT stuff but recently has been putting forth almost no effort and seems to be milking the rewards pool. Not a fan of this type of behavior so I removed him with no intentions of giving him up-votes from now on.

thank you for the nomination, yes agree with too much spam and it's sucking out the rewards

Even worse it just drowns out the good content in a sea of useless information.
How have you been man? Still traveling a lot I see :P

I enjoyed this read. This post has prompted me to write a post of my own on this subject. I have a few ideas In the works do far. Talking about the same message but from another perspective perhaps.

If we ever want to see change on Steemit it will have to start with ourselves. We need to make concerted efforts to increase user engagement and create genuine interactions.

Have you noticed that people don't really try to comment farm anymore and we don't get as many of those "great post, upvoted" ones anymore?

I've been away from steemit for a while but now that I think about it I do recall plenty of those "up voted" type comments in the past.... 😄 Nice

I used to post here a lot. I believe that if people had came organically, maybe my stuff would have been liked and shared more. But... now I’m on another platform and doing well. Maybe I should have put more words and pictures, maybe more step by step instructions. Oh well. Have a good day man

It all boils down to the user and content discovery system. Other platforms have suggested people that pop into your feed whereas here you have to go out and find people manually. You end up getting drowned out by all the spam and bot voters so nobody thinks about upvoting your posts because they either don't see them or don't think it will be worth it in terms of reward.

If they can re-do the way that content is discovered and new authors are suggested then we should see some better retention rates and more networking overall.

Well, I appreciate that. Good luck 🍀

It is a good initiative; I decided last week to focus on quality and stopped to spam less the network with APPS like Actifit or DLike.

Good thinking man, right now it is all about quality over quantity on Steemit. If we want people to really start engaging and sticking around. These low- effort posts are ruining the experience for everyone not only by detracting from better material but it obscures and pushes down other content that should get more attention.

Dear @hotsauceislethal

Thank you for sharing link to your publication with me.

Fighting with spam and spammers is never going to go well, as long as it's profitable for them to do whatever they do. The only way is to reduce their insentives to the lowest levels ever.

Bots and spam used to be great way of building followerbase in the past (mostly on platforms like instagram and fb). Those days are gone. So it's already harder for them to exist.

Since price of STEEM is constantly dropping, I can only imagine that it's not going to be profitable for anyone to invest in STEEM just do earn some small payouts from spam. At the end they would be losing their funds.

Anyway, I noticed amount of spam to be reduced greately within past few months (since hf20) and it seem that we're heading in right direction. I'm so looking forward to see how HF21 will change this platform.

Upvote on the way! :) Great read.

Yours
Piotr

I just can't wait til the day we actually start onboarding more users. That will be amazing! Imagine us even having a few million active users, the price of STEEM would be sky high.

Hi @hotsauceislethal

Onboarding new users in large amounts with current signing up process? Ehm. I can't see it happening :(
