I want to ride my bicycle...

in #streetphotography7 years ago (edited)

When I first arrived in Adelaide in 2005. there were not too many bicycle riders in town. You could see few people on a bike here and there. As time went by and Tour Down Under become more popular a number of cyclists grew exponentially. This year's Tour Down Under started on 14th of January under scorching heat (above 40 degrees Celsius) but that didn’t stop competitors or visitors to really enjoy the event.

Now you can see bike riders everywhere, Adelaide is becoming small Holland. This was the inspiration for the whole series of photos and whenever I see someone on bike Queen’s song pops up in my head: “I want to ride my bicycle...I want to ride my bike.”

I edited all of these photos using black and white pinhole effect. Pinhole gives more structure and dimension to photos, make them more dramatic and punchy. If you don’t know how to get this look in editing process this is how you do it:

  1. Turn your photos into black and white either desaturating them or clicking on bw button in the editor of your choice.
  2. Raise contrast levels till black becomes really black and white almost burned out (Or you can raise black and white levels by sliding black and white sliders, depending on your editor of choice).
  3. Raise clarity till details become really punchy.
  4. Sharpen the image, 10-20 percent will be more than enough.
  5. Add vignette and expand it, leaving just a center of photo unaffected.
And that's it...you got pinhole black and white masterpiece.

You can additionally raise or drop down the exposure of the photo, depending on what effect you want to achieve. You will be amazed by the results. Even very boring photos can be glorified after applying the pinhole.

I hope I helped you at least a little bit with this explanation. If you want to share your pinhole editing results please feel free to post them in your comments, I would really love to see them!

Hi, just stopping by to inform you that your quality post is featured in Thank You Bicycle Spotlight - Issue #1 !

Thank you for very good post and amazing photos :)

The things I miss most about Denmark are the endless bike lanes, the bike traffic jams, and (of course) my bike. Sofia is unfortunately a terrible place for bikers. Lovely edits, Di! I usually do not bump the clarity and sharpening that much in my photos, but I use vignetting from time to time :)

Thank you dear. Adelaide was not that good for bikers vew years ago, but popularity changed things to better. I don’t use too much clarity or sharpening in other edits either, but pinhole is different, you need them in order to achieve effect.

I want too :) It's great that people are turning to this kind of ride.
And also I would like to say that I'm enjoying a lot your street art photographs, you have eye to capture and take out simple moments and make them great @dijana969.

Ooooh, thank you dear! That’s seriously wonderful compliment!
