The book thief - An original creepy story- Fiction

The book fell on the floor when Sarah finally fell asleep. She had been struggling to sleep properly for days now. Ever since she moved into this house. It was difficult to find proper housing  in this part of town, and everything was so overpriced.

She had to get used to the new sounds and the wooden floors creaking, but somehow reading helped a little bit to shut off her brain. There were so many changes in her life right now...new town, new house, new job... and she was just absolutely exhausted every night, but as soon as she climbed into bed she was wide awake, then rolled around for hours.

She didn’t know anyone in the street, except for Mrs Smith who lived in the oldest house on the block. She met her after she walked over to borrow a candle after her lights went out on the very first night she moved in.

Ever since she spoke to Mrs Smith, she's had this eerie feeling, but she knew it was just a little paranoia. Apparently someone broke into her house the previous night and that was enough to scare anyone.

"Slept like a log through the whole thing." Mrs Smith said. "Only worldly stuff... nothing too important that couldn't be replaced. At least they haven't taken my books as those are my most valuable possessions...would you like to borrow one of my books to read?"

The sound of a lawnmower woke Sarah and she couldn't believe that she had such a good night's rest. She felt totally refreshed and when she got up to shower, she saw the book neatly closed next to her bed on the side-table. There were a pair of glasses on top of the book that she didn't recognize.

"I wonder whose glasses these are?" she wondered. Perhaps I brought them home by mistake. It was the longest day ever and Sarah only arrived home after seven o clock. She was totally exhausted again. She made herself a quick salad and drank a glass of wine to help her relax.  She switched on the television and couldn't find anything to watch so she decided to go to bed early.

She decided to read a few more chapters from the book she borrowed and walked over to her side of the bed.

"I must be going out of my mind, I could've sworn there was a pair of glasses here this morning...it must have been my imagination..."

Somewhere during the night Sarah woke up when the book fell on the wooden floor. She reached for the book and felt a cool breeze coming in through the window. She got up to close the window and struggled to close it.

It was stuck and after a few minutes of intense struggling, she managed to close the window.  She noticed a strange looking man standing in the dark under the tree looking towards her house. He was dressed in black and she could see that he wore glasses. She quickly closed the curtains, but peeked and saw that the man was slowly walking back towards the house.

"Why would someone be outside in the middle of the night? ” Perhaps it was a family member visiting that needed some fresh air” she thought and went back to bed.

“That old house would suffocate anyone” she thought and fell asleep.

She had the weirdest feeling when she woke up the next morning. That vision of that creepy old man haunted her in her sleep. She dreamt about him the whole night and it literally felt as if he's been watching her every move.

The room was freezing cold and she turned around to see the window open again.

“How the hell did that happen? I closed that window myself!”

She was shivering, and quickly walked over to close the window. She was startled when she turned around to go back to bed.

Right next to her bed was a weird old man wearing glasses that looked very familiar. He looked straight towards her and then turned away and picked up the book next to her bed. She stood there frozen in time while she watched the old man walking straight towards her.  She couldn't breath and felt as if she was going to pass out.

He walked right through her and she heard the window open behind her. He disappeared just as quickly as he appeared. She looked out the window and saw nothing but an old empty ruined house at the end of the block, and it looked as if no one has lived there for years.

She rattled when she grabbed her phone and dialed her estate agent.

“Hi Mandy, get me out of here…."

Very well written story and very nice, it is really scary as well.

Oh my, what an intriguing story. I guess it is best to pay a little more to get a safer place to stay. How disturbing for Sarah! Thank-you as always for a great read!
